It's horrifying to think of all the times this happens and doesn't make the news. Fark this world.

Good.

Suspend the organization from the league for a season for violating the "personal" conduct policy.

After all, corporations are people too.  And if you don't like that fact, get SCOTUS to overturn that precedent!

The lawsuit describes Watson's behavior as being part of a "disturbing, predatory, and incriminating pattern with a multitude of female victims."

"Predatory?  How was he a predator?  He just had a sex addiction?" - The farking argument someone used in a thread last night.

I'm a Detroit sports fan. I've experienced a lot of incompetence from a lot of sports front offices. Matt Millen and Randy Smith have to be among the Top 10 worst general managers in sports history (not counting those who create, enforced and in some cases prolonged the color line, who have a category all their own).

But I have never seen anything like the stupidity of the Browns paying an above premium price for Watson without adequately investigating these claims. It is just shockingly incompetent.

Or shockingly corrupt, or shockingly uncaring.

Unless you are a Cleveland fan in which case it's normal business.

Holy shiat you aren't kidding.  That has to be the worst series of takes and doubling down in quite some time.

100% guaranteed contract.... Unbelievable.

Of course, it was only a short time ago that the NFL covered for similar (if less compulsive, and less rapey) behavior from Favre, so maybe Cleveland just thought the NFL hadn't changed... and Favre's known behavior (UWIE), while gross, was less assaulting than Watson.

Don't forget Bob Kraft.

It's not a problem if the owner does it.  Or the Patriots do it.

At least Kraft's grossness was consensual, if not legal.

You're assuming that they didn't investigate, instead of just hand-waving it away. (I mean, it is the Browns, so it wouldn't be surprising in the least that they did the trade based solely on some random Twitter post Haslam happened to see, but one would think there was at least *some* background checking. Of course, this again being the Browns, said checking may have been calling up Rusty Hardin and asking "Is your client guilty of anything except being misunderstood?")  The fact that the contract is structured the way it is indicates that the Browns were fully expecting for him to be suspended for most if not all of the first year, which puts the needle more at "Don't care" than "Didn't know".

No it was not consensual.  Knowledge that you'll get fired and deported if you don't do it does not equal consent.
More importantly, if there had been consent, he would not have been interested.  Try to think like a wealthy person.
