Because the truck is paid off, there is practically no vehicle I can buy which would save me money on gas after considering payments and insurance increases. If you really want to save money, don't trade in your vehicle every time it gets paid off.

Walk or ride a bike!

I'm in Canada. I'm not riding a bike in -30°C

Not even to your local weed store, cornershop, or library?  You must like be one of those Snowflakes I keep hearing about.

Not sure if you're joking or not but... the premise was "don't buy these cars".

No, the premise was "Here's cars you think are efficient that really aren't".

Nobody things an RX8 is high on the list of people wanting to save gas.

You don't want to add a gallon of gas and a quart of oil every 15 miles?

I get that most people don't have access to good public transit. But most people also drive to places they could easily walk or bike to.

I had a thought yesterday about how I rarely see New Beetles on the road anymore even though the model was discontinued only 11 years ago.

As long as the vehicle is paid for (no payments and cheap insurance) it scarcely matters what sort of MPG it gets.

Bike/walk 15 miles to and from work in 100 degree heat.  It's probably hard to see the plebes from on top of your giant bicycle...

Just because it doesn't work for your stupid commute doesn't mean it can't work for trips within your neighborhood, like to the cornershop or the weed store or the library.  And even if you're not going to do it, don't you think this guy would like a sidewalk?

Having active transportation and public transportation infrastructure makes life better for motorists, too, because now people who don't have to drive, aren't.

Minimum 60 smiles per gallon, even better on fun twisties.  Best tank was 80+ mpg.

And I can use the carpool lane

I mean, if the sidewalks and cycleway infrastructure for that existed.  We're missing that, too.  And we did this to ourselves as a country.

Blame cyclists for that. It was a California cyclist who fought against infrastructure on the basis that only hardcore cyclists should be on the road and anyone too soft or timid to share a regular traffic lane should just not ride. He made up an engineering specialty and literally wrote the book on proper bicycle infrastructure, testifying before various committees and getting it approved by the NHTSA. That meant that his views were written into federally funded roads and intersections. IIRC he was an actual engineer but he designed factory layouts, nothing to do with civil engineering or traffic stuff.

I forget his name, just that he was a raging asshat who played a big part in obstructing progress because he wanted to only be in the company of elites. Popularizing bicycling meant associating with people who were not elite cyclists. That thought made him upset.

Last year, 100K Civics and Corollas were going for $15K. WTF? Instead I found a Fiesta. It was not a car I would have considered before.

5-speed stick, 37mpg city, $8K, fun as hell to drive.

Loving it.

Yeah, there's a good reason for that: planned obsolescence. They weren't exactly built with longevity in mind. They were a profit margin darling. Same reason PT Cruisers all but disappeared about a decade after they went out of production.

I haven't seen a Nu Beetle in a while, but I see PT Cruisers all the time.   My mom even owns one.

All cars suck.

Electrify: Barricaded Gunman: mongbiohazard: Wish Toyota still made the Prius C. Like my Fit, but 50+MPG instead of 30+.

I'm averaging 46.5 with a standard 2016 Prius, it wouldn't be worth downsizing to the C for such a limited mileage improvement.

My 2015 Mitsubishi Mirage, which I use to commute 60 miles per day (30 each way) on well maintained country roads with few stops and speed limits between 50 and 55 miles per hour, gets me FIFTY MILES PER GALLON on average!

/some trips even come to SIXTY MILES PER GALLON according to the display, though that is just the trip itself and not the tank average

"In the past few years, Mitsubishi have fallen down the ranks to become one of the most unreliable car brands on the market. In 2016 they were named one of the worst car brands by consumer reports. They came third from the bottom, scoring just 51."
