Anyone have four bucks I can borrow?

Taxpayers will pay for the upkeep, will be liable for any damages and will promptly return it when the war is over. I'm sure we'll even throw in a bonus handy J so the Russian royals had are satisfied with the service.

Strip out anything gaudy, and ask the science nerds if they could use it for any cool experiments.  If the answer is no, turn it into a reef so the Republicans don't give it back next time they have the White House.

FTFA: It's not clear how long the seized boat will stay in San Diego. Justice officials said the plan is to eventually sell it off.

And then immediately arrest the buyer, who in all likelihood will turn out to be another Russian oligarch.

Give it to Scripps to be made into a research vessel

What is with these guys and mega-yachts?

Do you have to get one if you're an kleptocratic oligarch?

Some remodeling on the superstructure, better radars, a harpoon launcher forward, a antiaircraft battery aft, a coat of gray paint and rename it the Zelensky, and presto, Ukraine has a navy.

I'm sure it's money laundering.

I'm not into today's movie or tv stars and shows but why not sell it to Hollywood and blow it up before making the reef?

A rather good friend works for Scripps. She would love to get her hands on a big vessel and I'm sure a lot of researchers would as well

Known as the Amadea, it is 348-feet long, and features a helipad and a swimming pool

But does it fly?

According to that movie The Conservation Game, Jack Hanna would just find the most lucrative way to exploit the giraffes until they're dead.

Still trying to understand how these mega boats can be seized carte blanche.

Oligarchs gonna oligarch, but these aren't warships, and I don't see how the US has a right to summarily take possession.

There's been no declaration of war from the US or any other country in the world.  I don't even think Ukraine has declared war, and they're the ones getting their asses kicked.

Along the same lines, why didn't the US start seizing Saudi mega yachts after Khasoggi got spatchcocked?

Just asking.

People are funnying your comment, but seriously, what the fark are we going to do with a yacht we can't sell?

A boat that big requires monthly staff just to stay running, much less keeping it clean. It's a floating farking hotel. What the hell are we going to do with it?

If we (the US) doesn't sell it soon, at fire sale prices, it's a white elephant. Better to tug it over to Florida and make a reef.

Or, and I'm being creative, make it part of our government:

We already have limousines and planes for the president, why not add a boat?

Fair question, they are doing it under civil forfeiture claims, which everybody on Fark agrees is terrible except this time. The US coordinated with other countries to seize the boats as purchases from illegal funds. Then, in this case, they brought the boat to the US.

Basically, they're accusing the owners of the yachts that they have purchased the yachts with illegal funds, so they have to come to the place where their yacht is currently and go through a court case to get it back. In this case, a Russian oligarch would be insane to travel to the US.

Yeah, it's a mystery.

The two happiest days in a boater's life: First when he buys it it and second when he gets rid of it. We've made a buncha Rooshians so Very happy.

The trip back from Fiji must have been the best week of some government employees' lives.  Fly to Fiji, pick up boat, "make sure to put your feet up on the cushions, and the wine cellar is pretty good".

I've been assuming it's a way of squirreling away their ill-gotten gains in tangible objects somewhere beyond the reach of the people they were stealing from.

When all of those places actually have high-end hotels of their own and I could just fly to any of them? All for far, far less hassle & cost? I actually don't.

But I definitely buy the int'l-hiding & money-laundering angles.

These guys' toys are ripe for seizure because there's no way any of these crooks could open up their accounts and demonstrate the provenance of the hundreds of millions used to purchase the items.

It's an excellent move because it shows everyday Russians in their farked-up squalid lives how these people live and rip them off on a daily basis.
