About 30 years ago me and a buddy went for first ride of the season.  It was and probably still is an amazing coaster.  Used to travel all over for coasters, now my old bones don't appreciate them like they used to.  The last time I rode a roller coaster was the last time I rode a roller coaster.

That's because the line is waaaay too long.

No.  No it's not.

Millennium Force is the best ride in America.  Manta at Seaworld Orlando is a lot of fun, too.  Oh... and Montu and Busch Gardens Tampa.  Apollo's Chariot at Busch Gardens Williamsburg.

All of these are better than the cyclone.

The Beast at Kings Island, The Phoenix at Knoebels, Jack Rabbit at Kennywood, are all arguably better rides than the Cyclone but only the Cyclone is the Cyclone.  Expecially in the last seat.

offacue: The Beast at Kings Island

I'm old enough that most wooden coasters just beat the snot out of me and aren't fun anymore.  It's been a decade almost since I was and Kings Island and rode the Beast.  I got off that ride and felt like I had ruptured my spleen.  I love that it goes out through the woods like it does, but my body just won't let me ride ones like that any more.

Jack Rabbit was closed the only time I've been to Kennywood.  The Steel Phantom was a lot of fun, though...

No coaster has ever given me such a crick in my neck as Millennium Force.  I haven't been on The Beast at King's Island, but these wooden coasters are evil.

Cyclone is probably not the best wooden roller coaster out there, but it is fun to ride. And it has its place in history. I would say The Beast is up there too. Never got to ride Colossus, but that looked like fun too.

I miss Rolling Thunder at Six Flags Great Adventure. El Toro is its wooden replacement there, but it doesn't have the feel of "Oh shiat the rotting wood may collapse while I'm riding this thing" that Rolling Thunder had.

From a longtime surfer, the Grizzly wooden coaster at Great America in Santa Clara is hands down the second most fluid ride out there

First was Triple Play; if you stood up on the ride it was like skating a 20 fotot tri-pipe

The Phoenix is the best wooden coaster I've ever been on when it comes to airtime. And Knoebels is an underappreciated park in general.

The Wild Cat at Hershey Park is also a hell of a lot of fun.

I've never been on the Cyclone (not much reason for me to go to that part of Brooklyn from NJ).

IIRC, Montu did not exist when I visited Busch Gardens Tampa in 1993....but Kumba was awesome.  I rode on it before closing...probably rode it 5 or 6 times in a row because nobody was in line.

/Also enjoyed Draken Fire at Busch Gardens Williamsburg.

That's always been part of the "thrill" of wooden coasters, that rickety sound, as if you can hear the nails popping loose and the wood splintering.

I can only imagine the amount of structural degradation that a 95 year old wooden coaster at the Atlantic water's edge has built up over the years.  One can only hope that the people that maintain it are union guys.

The Beast at King's Island is a great coaster. Son of Beast, however, was not. I rode it when it first opened before they took the loop out. I'm not sure how that thing ever passed any kind of safety testing.

2022-06-27 5:20:12 PM
The ride is fun because it has a bench seat with a safe but loose enough lap bar so that you can get knocked around and feel your stomach go into your lungs on sudden drops. It does that better than most modern coasters. I'm guessing no one would build a coaster like this now from a safety perspective but damn if its not time tested.

I'll second the Beast. Part of the fun is waiting in line and watching the whole damn structure flex when cars go by.

Son of the Beast was an abomination. Wooden coasters are known for their jerky rides, but it's an art. Directional shifts need to be done with enough care that you don't have a concussion when you get off the goddamn ride. Son of Beast (SOB - get it? GET IT?) was just poorly designed from the get-go.

I'll second you on that one.  Son of Beast was just awful.  Especially when it had the loop in it.  I can't decide if it was worse than the beast, though, because both of them beat the snot out of me.
