Bank networks have hiccups all the time.  Did she play the "do you know who I am" card?  No?  Then who TF cares.  What a non-story.

I carry one card. If that doesn't work, I wink and say "is there any other way I can make it up to you?"

I never understood the deep shame people have over this. It's like people think that other people will think they don't have money, when in reality everyone knows that lack of money isn't really a barrier to charges going through. Banks are happy to let you overdraft your account and charge you fees for it. All a declined card really means is that there was some error in processing the card, most likely not the fault of the cardholder. So run a different card and check with your bank about it later.

No one is going to spend too much time looking at your face when they're wondering why you've got a fancy toilet on your head

That headgear is called a fascinator & she most likely got paid to wear it by a designer. People expected to be photographed at high profile events will often be paid to wear items made by designers to increase exposure.
Thanks to their parents, these ladies faces have been splashed all over the media their entire lives. They couldn't live an incognito life in any kind of modern country, especially w/ this one's...distinctive appearance.

I once sat behind her on a commercial flight to a holiday Greek island from Heathrow.

I wouldn't have noticed her... but on a plane of 200 tourists in shorts and tshirts... there were two men in black suits and sunglasses on the rows in front and behind her, not drinking and constantly scanning the plane. Not exactly subtle incognito.

(yes, she was in economy)

It never occurred to me before, but holy hell does she look like Prince Phillip.

Priapetic: She's reasonably attractive, but her nose/lips/mouth shape makes me think of a weasel about to lunge into a pipeful of meat.  I wouldn't want to be between those teeth and a lump of sugar.

She's quite cute, but her eyes are just too much like her fathers. I suspect if I ever was in a position to kiss her I'd just be thinking about him, and that's not a good thing....

anfrind: I don't know how it is in the U.K., but I remember reading ~6 years ago about how shameful it was seen to be among certain elites in New York City if you went to a restaurant with friends and paid with someone other than a high-end American Express charge card.  Maybe something similar is going on here?

If I remember correctly, it came up at that time because Jared Kushner had been seen paying for a restaurant bill with a Visa card, which led to rumors that his credit was much worse than he was willing to admit.

/rich people are weird

I suspect among the nouveau riche and the wannabes it would matter. If you're seriously rich and/or old money you don't give a damn about what anyone else thinks. I know a multimillionaire who drives a twenty year old Land Rover that's falling apart.

That's what I was wondering. If I was a rich, I'd have at least 4.

Seeing as how I'm a poor, I only have 2. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

My belief is not to put all your eggs in one basket. I have three credit cards, a Visa, a Mastercard and an Amex, all from different banks. The chances of all three being blocked/cancelled/hacked at the same time are small.
