If they hadn't killed him and instead he died old and broke after a stay in jail a long with a bunch of his people it might have died off like a lot of American religious movements. And Salt Lake would have been a really cool area (well it's getting better, but it's still got a lot of that undertone).

He was charged with treason and conspiracy by Illinois authorities
Oh the good old days when that happened... too bad we can't bring that back.

Mormonism is 2nd only to Scientology in my list of religions that are so blindingly obviously bullshiat thought up by a con artist that I can't believe anybody joined. Yes, all religions are bullshiat, but most of the others have at least a millennia of history, so I can see how people get sucked into those... but it doesn't take much research at all to realize that Smith and Hubbard were just con men

Wait...why? Did you, like, pee on the pebbles or something? I mean, that works as a practical joke, but then you wind up having your own pee all over your own hands as well. Is there some angle I'm not seeing here?

Just to be on the safe side, my advice is to always wear gloves when snatching pebbles from other peoples' hands.

Also, it's totally worth it to both over-analyze, and over-explain, every throw-away joke one comes across. A belief that I take to heart.

I love the article.  It says "A+E Networks This content is not available in your area."

One of the odd things that came out of the Mormon exodus from Illinois is that Missouri started the whole "marriage is between one man and one woman".  Up until that time marriage was a religious thing to get into and the state only had to deal with it when the marriage ended because someone died, ran away or the very rare divorce.  Once the Missouri laws started running off the Mormons, other states started to move marriage from a religious thing into a state thing.

I am a firm believer in religion being the opiate of the masses and them being an organized scam of sorts. That being said, some of the most solid people I've ever met have been Mormon. Honest, hardworking, helpful and surprisingly good in a fight. I know that just like negative biases generated by a few bad folks not being the sum of whatever socioeconomic group they are in, I should do the same when positive biases predispose me to look at a group in the positive way, but it's difficult for me to do that.

in my experience what they say (or print on a tee) has very little to do with what they actually do.  Same goes for all religions though the lengths that they will go to, tocircumnavigate the rules often end up with a pretty fun "solution".

LOL! Though to be pedantic, Abrahamic religions are all the big 3. Christianity, Islam, Judaism.

Fun fact, when I was Mormon as a kid, kids were given basically illustrated stories of this happening. Nothing like showing children the assassination of someone for what he was teaching lol.

A few years ago, my husband and I were flying from Phoenix to SLC. Sitting behind us was a 20-year old BYU student, and sitting across from here were a few Salt Lake Bees baseball players (the Bees are the Angels' Triple A affiliate). Chatting them up, she said, "Like, I'm Mormon (up-speak), but I'm not weird or anything." We had to work hard to not bust out laughing.

My little brother spray painted "Joseph Smith was a latter day drunk" on the Mormon "seminary" located across the street from his school.  They tried saying the act produced $70,000 worth of damage.  My stepfather went down there with a bottle of goof-off and a rag at night and wiped off in 10 minutes.  They tried to play the religious persecution card, but my little bro's father's family is 100% derived from the original band that traveled with Brigham young, and my bro has the inherited health problems to prove it, so they just shut up and it was then treated like any other act of teenage vandalism.

Also, stepfather mentioned was no more the boy's father than he was mine, but he was a pretty decent guy nonetheless.  Despite being from an old Mormon family and carrying a significant inherited condition, no one from his mormon family wanted anything to do with him until it became apparent that he was going to inherit a significant share of family assets when his father died.  Don't get me wrong, they offered my mother assistance, but only contingent on her and the boy joining the Church.

Nope Joe Smith was already expounding "the Principle"  while he was still alive.  It has a lot to do with why she and her oldest Son founded the Reorganized  Church of the Latter-Day Saints that still exists to this day in Saint Louis (though calls itself the Community of Christ for the last 20 years)

John Krakauer in the book "Under the Banner of Heaven" males a pretty convincing case that the angry mobs that lynched Joseph Smith weren't really religious motivated at all.   The Plural marriage thing may have riled up some people, but what really pissed off the Non-Mormons was the massive counterfeiting and forgery operation the Mormons were running that was ripping off local merchants stealing land via false transfer deeds etc.   Mormonism then and now requires scrupulous honest and forthrightness...among the brethren.  The outside world?  Never give a sucker an even break.    "Bleeding the Beast" is what they call it

They're no bad people, not at all! What they are is brainwashed into believing that if the person they love doesn't follow these exact guidelines of a belief system based on white male supremacy that person will be lost to them eternally. B/c you don't choose you're w/ in the Eternal Kingdom, it's the family you're sealed to; & that family has to have been righteous (paid tithing), virtuous (paid tithing) & chaste as called by the Doctrine & Covenants (paid tithing) so they could participate in Temple rituals.
The good side of kind Mormons is balanced out by the bad parts where women & people of color are permanent 2nd class citizens based on doctrine. Even if they claim not to teach it anymore they still live it. Look into Heavenly Mother & a Second Anointing, as well as the Mark of Cain.
Big deal, you might say - all religion is pretty nutty! You're not wrong there, friend. But this religion expects action from its members, in their family & in their community - action that reflects the church's stance of excluding people if they don't play ball to the point of legislating church doctrine into law.

Many years of first hand experience show me that Mormons are the first to cheat when no one is looking and first to say, "it was a joke" or "I was just testing you" when caught out.

Old but true - always bring more than one Mormon fishing with you else the single one will drink all your beer.

Not really looking forward to the family reunion next week in deep, mayonnaisy Mormon country.   Weed vape is going to get some major use .....
