I didn't have a clue who was in the Stanley cup finals but I assumed it was team in Canada winning. Eh, close enough.

It's been 28 years since a Canadian team has won the Stanley Cup. The assumption that a Canadian team won is amusing to NHL fans because Canadian teams do NOT win the Stanley Cup.

Colorado didn't join the Union until well after the Civil War and the abolishment of slavery. So it wasn't ever a "slave" or "free". And Florida was technically a slave state but hardly anyone lived there until the 20th century - it wasn't a major driver of slavery in the South.

But, hey I get it this being Fark and all. Smoking pot is cool, Florida isn't.

Fairly certain this headline is reflecting today, not the Civil War with Florida being considered a red state ran by dime store Christian theocrats and Colorado being considered a blue state now (even though they've foisted boebert on us).

Although 43% of NHL players are still Canadian, vs. 21% American, and 10% Swedish, 5% Russian, and others lesser from there.  So, it is still almost half the players are Canadian, but, they don't have enough large cities to host more than ~20% of the NHL teams.

Nothing like multiple Stanley Cup runs to burn out a team. Just ask the Hawks. Then again, the GM traded away or let walk any young player with a pulse in that situation, so the defenders with burned out legs couldn't defend.

/then that incident came to the surface...

Badge posting. Avs have had a great team, perhaps a quasi-all star team, for a couple years now.  Great to see them hoist it even if it means Jack fubbin Johnson gets his day with the cup.

This is a really stupid headline and subby should feel bad.

Avs were incredible this post-season. Truly the best team won the cup. It was incredible to watch the third period last night. Bolts needed a goal to save their season and could only muster like 1-2 shots in the first 15 minutes because the Avs were just too dominant.

Ummmm, every other team besides Tampa?

And they made it to a third and pushed to a game 6 against what I think everyone would agree was a superior team. You can hate Tampa all you want, but what they've done the last 3 seasons has been remarkable.

I agree that the headline is a weird flex, and that "Free State" would refer to Kansas more than anything, but the Colorado Infantry and Calvary regiments of the time weren't fighting for the Confederacy, that's for damn sure.

Anyway, good to see the Avs get back to some glory. Many of the years since they last won were pretty rough. Last night makes it all worth it.

Exactly what I was thinking. Biggest bunch of whiny titty babies I've ever seen, complaining incessantly after giving up every goal. Must be nice to play for Cooper--you never have to take responsibility for anything since it's always the official's fault.

During the civil war period, Colorado Territory did raise a couple regiments for the Union. Those, some militia, and a motley mix of natives, and Rancheros led by General (by brevet) Kit Carson beat back an invasion by the ancestor to the Texas Rangers when they attempted to seize the federal gold depository in Denver.

/and then some of those units perpetrated the Covington Massacre
//whose leaders, surprisingly, the Congress investigated and punished
