Kids these days. No patience. My mom will drive around Manhattan for an hour trying to find free parking. I've fought with her when offering to pay peak garage rates.

Corporate legend at a place I used to work many years ago had it that the CEO once flew back into DFW after one particularly long trip and had some exorbitant parking fees to pay.  Being the smart guy that he is he called a tow truck and paid for the tow instead.

They charged the tow truck to enter and leave, but not the car it left with and he saved the company a bunch of money on airport parking..

Is she one of those people who does 10 over then jabs the brakes to do 5 under when she sees a speed camera?

A speed camera that's inactive. And only gives you a $40 ticket when it is?  That won't ping until 12 over?  That doesn't report to insurance?  That doesn't count as points on your license.

If so, I've seen her every single morning in suburban Maryland.

I'd be happy to Zelle these guys the money for a ticket if they just speed up or get the fark out of the way.

Hell no. She doesn't give a shiat about speed limits. She will, though, block a one way street waiting for someone to pack their shopping and get a child into a car seat while ten cars behind her are honking. Hence, why a fight ensues.

He was driving on private property. No license is necessary for that (offer only valid in the United States, in probably most states but I bet there are a few weird ones that won't let you drive a car on private property without a license).

If only he'd had a jacked up 4x4 SUV, then he would not have gotten stuck. Poor bastards with their tiny cars can't even get out of paying parking fees correctly.

He was trying to find a place to park in Manhattan and some parking attendant waved him in and allowed him to park for free


Similar to the legendary fellow out west who painted his back-country vehicle with Army green, and on the bottom of the door "USC 321-54-9876" (US Citizen and his Social Security number). He claimed to get fewer warnings from park rangers during remote travels. Unknown whether he was tricking them, or if the rangers just figured that someone who went to that much trouble also knew how to deal with the wilderness.

Good question, and it's probably a thorny legal debacle to find jurisdiction. For example, the Illinois tollways are owned by a quasi-government agency (Illinois Toll Authority) and I always wondered two things:
1. How does the State Police issue traffic tickets on private (pay to use) roads? I'm sure the authority is buried somewhere in state law.
2. How do I get a refund of my motor fuel tax for fuel used while driving on the tollway? My tolls pay for those roads. It's the same as if I used motor fuel off-road - where can I get my tax refund?

It is not that difficult in England and Wales (Scotland may differ).

To drive on a public highway in England and Wales you need a valid license and valid insurance. The legal definition a public highway is easy, it is what ever the public uses as a highway and it doesn't matter who owns or maintains the land.

So a supermarket carpark is just as much a public highway as a motorway as there is no method to stop the public from using it, while a carpark that will only let in a very small group of people through its barriers would not be a public highway. So as this carpark is open to the public it will take a very expensive barrister to give it some real legal razzle dazzle to give this person a chance of getting off.
