Everything was going right for Republicans in the midterm campaign. Then the Supreme Court decision came down.

Republicans could have taken TFG's correct advice (!!) and just downplayed it, or at least not crow about at every opportunity. No, they had to own it to keep their base happy, their base that would never abandon them regardless.

Republicans would rather die and go to hell than vote Democrat.  This doesn't hurt them with Republicans at all.  It only gets a few more Democrats off their asses to go vote.  Maybe.

Or maybe non-Republican voters are going to be so pissed off at the Democrats for this that they will split the vote by trying to make the Socialists a thing.  I think it's a little more subtle than what Politico says.

I believe you're right.

I don't want to talk to Republicans anymore, even family members.

And I'd like AOC to stfu for a few minutes or days.  I love her but she is not helping anything or anybody lately with her burgeoning egomania.

If the Democrats don't turn this into the primary election issue it's completely demonstrative of their complicity in the Fascist takeover of the USA.

Full stop.

I have a friend who keeps evoking the "dog that caught the car" phrase to suggest that republicans have hurt their cause by removing RvW as a rallying issue for their voters.
He's just sure now that the religious right has their prize they will lose their inspiration to vote.

I called BS on this because, imho, the republicans know exactly what they're doing, they will campaign on this hard and double down on their even more draconian wish list and use this victory to say "See? Support us! We get things done!"
Even worse this will re-energize support for Trump as the man who appointed those justices.
He certainly hasn't wasted any time taking credit for it.

Geez. The more I think about this, the sadder and more terrified I become.

Even if I'm ever back in Boston in the foreseeable future, I feel like I'd not even want to go further west than Newton and Brookline, further north than Cambridge and Somerville, and further south than Dorchester. Not sure I'd feel safe anywhere else.

They will. Problem is their "core" is not enough to win elections. They need swing voters who they just pissed off 50% of.

I'm one of those people too. Maybe we are all wrong, but I base my opinion on growing up in the South and knowing conservative folks, some of them lgbtq and/or people of color. Conservatives are every bit as lazy as anyone else, but abortion was the single issue that consistently got them out of bed and into the voting booth. Abortion was their number one issue by far. Look at what were their second highest priorities were over the past few decades: building a wall, locking her up, football players kneeling, migrant caravans, cancelling PBS, ect. When I was young their second most pressing issue was flag burning and that's not even on the radar anymore.

I'm not saying Democrats shouldn't feel urgency or should get complacent. I think we should see this as a potential advantage this fall and redouble our efforts. Perhaps the loss of Republican motivation will be negligible, but I personally don't see GOP enthusiasm remaining at the same level. Overturning Roe was their proverbial brass ring.

Start now. Every Democrat's commercial needs to feature Republicans' connections to the decision, and it needs to run every single day.

Roe v. Wade and the Jan. 6th Committee findings.

Hang the anchors around their neck and let them drown.

Yep, I read that article too.   Malta doesn't get much attention because it's a small island below Italy, but Maltese women have to travel abroad for healthcare.

I wish I could believe that now like I did a few years ago but the GOP has been playing the long game for the last forty years and they've had plenty of time to plan for this outcome.
They have been building a list of substitute grievances to back fill the hole left by the repeal of RvW.
They will now push to outlaw abortion nationally, "The jobs not done yet!".
That alone will keep them voting.

Sorry to be so disillusioned.

The women's rights groups need a John Scopes. (The guy who taught evolution specifically to get it challenged in court)

In a state with no exceptions for maternal health, find a woman with an ectopic pregnancy, do the abortion and have the doctor hold a press conference specifically saying "Yes, I just performed an abortion- the woman would have died otherwise"

Dare them to prosecute- they can deal with the torrent of bad publicity for saving a woman's life or they can ignore it and make it clear they aren't really serious about the law

Bad publicity doesn't matter anymore. We expect bad things to happen and we feel powerless. If bad publicity mattered Wells Fargo wouldn't be around anymore.

That's mostly blowing back on Trump, who a lot of the GOP want to sideline in favor of one of their own establishment guys to lead America into a new Reich.

In most races in anything approaching a swing district the GOP are doing just fine.

I'd put it closer to 35%, given that about 30% of women either a) don't mind seeing other women busted down a peg or two or b) just vote the way their man does.

No. This will not hut Republican fortunes, but rather advance them.
This is a victory - and Americans love a winner.
Winners are strong.
Winners don't take any shiat.
Winners don't afraid of anything.
People fear being on the losing side far more than they fear being on the evil side.
