What's next? Would a mayor ghost the city and stay on the payroll? Oh wait, that's been done?

Would a member of Congress never show up for voting sessions and still get paid?  Wait, most of them do that?

The police chief's "vacation" doesn't seem so bad now.

More specifics would be nice, like when is he going to be back, and do they have a temporary chief in mind or is the town so Mayberry that it doesn't matter if the Chief is there with his one bullet in his revolver?

There are a lot of legitimate reasons why he could be away. Close family member could have got cancer, for instance. I'm going with rehab too. You would want rehab too if you were in that kind of situation right and to keep your job, right? Rehab can be a turning point for people, if they embrace it.

If you show up for voting sessions, you're not working.

Politicians who actually work are cleared from voting. Only bums with nothing to do sit in sessions.

I'm guessing it's a medical thing.

Recovering from a stroke or even hip or back surgery can keep you out for months.

Combine that sort of situation with HIPPA and there just isn't much the town can say publicly.

He and Ron Sellon moved into an apartment.  Both are divorced and needed a place to stay. One is messy and one is obsessively clean!  This odd couple doesn't need to write sports or be a photographer.  They're still collecting Chief salaries!  Find out if that wacky chief Sean Gibbons was the one who took the $50 when the lights went out!

When this happened in my New England hometown, it turned out the local cop was using his access to troubled youth to sexually abuse them.  Because, who ya' gonna believe, Officer Friendly or that no good Smith boy?

/He was eventually fired, but the statute of limitations had run out. However, he couldn't keep his hand off the adolescent males, so he finally went to prision for sexual abuse in the town he had relocated to.

A lot of legit reasons are communicated though. Like "away for family emergency". Using the language "personnel issue" means "there are legal statues that make privacy a requirement".

Even something like rehab could be covered with "away for health reasons".

"Personnel issues" sounds like he did something in violation of some major code of conduct.

They could say those things, but anyone who competently talks to the press about these types of subjects will always say "we do not comment on personnel issues."  For one, because they don't want to make a "no comment" into a wink and a nod that something is up. But further than that, it's not the employer's job to tell the public about the employee's health reasons or family emergencies, even vaguely.

Yep.  Unlike wackos and their "HIPPA" claims, actual HR departments know that as a party to medical and personal issues, HIPAA regulations strongly discourage the employer from disclosing protected information, so it's simply easier to not release any information when it can be readily attributed to a particular person.

I imagine that it can even be problematic for the release of what would normally be anonymous statistics about an organization, if that organization is sufficiently small that someone could tie those statistics to individual people easily enough.

If the man is in trouble for his own actions then hopefully they'll manage to investigate and resolve.  If he or someone in his life faces medical complications hopefully they'll recover.  Otherwise this isn't really something I'm going to get worked up over.

It's Wayland, so I have to assume the town has completely gone off the rails without the police chief around to keep things in order. Why just the other day I heard some miscreant was eating his salad with his DESSERT fork and there was nobody there to stop him!

Keeping this sort of thing secret never ends well. I grock the temptation to maintain peace and people's privacy - but in the end, it just attracts curiosity and creates untrustworthy optics, and everything ends up getting unearthed publicly anyway, and in an uglier way than if they had been open to begin with.

Eh, without more info I'm not going to make any judgements.

He's a cop, so I will judge that aspect of him, but not this.

Since it appears it's an extended leave and they can't say why, it sounds like FMLA.  Which everyone deserves and should be expanded with (more) pay.  So I'm not going to make judgements or accusations about why he's gone or say that it is unfair that he gets to do that.  Almost everyone is covered by FMLA and targeting him for it is saying that nobody should get it either.

Could be cancer, could be his wife or kid has cancer, could be addiction, could be wife or kid having an addiction.  Could be 1 of a million medical or familial crisis that is keeping him away.

Who knows, who cares at this point.  I know it sounds juicy but it is just a basic right the majority of every working person has.

Here's the thing though, Michigan only pays up to 80 hours of missed time while on FMLA.  So he only got paid for the first 2 weeks of being gone.  So the only real damage is the town is short 1 officer... who is more of a paper pusher anyways so not a big loss.  At the same time, he's gotta pay his portion of the insurance premiums and any other benefits he has to out of pocket still.

So he's losing money while doing this.  So it's not exactly like he's "gaming" the system.

Now if it comes out that he accepted the position in December knowing that he was going to do that, sure it's a problem.  But cannot discipline him until he's officially back.

So a paper called MetroWest Daily News writes a story about a town called Wayland and doesn't say what state it is in. It appears it is in MA. With the town name Ashland I figured OR and he transferred from MA to the west coast.

So shouldn't they be MetroEast?

One of my pet peeves in stories is they mention towns and not the state as if I am supposed to know where every little podunk town is. There are 34 Springfields according to the googs.I would recognize Fresno but even then there are 5 of them and 32 Ashlands.

That's no excuse. It used to be who, what, when, why, where. It's on the net. The expectation is it will be spread beyond a local audience.

On their about section it is based in Framingham MA and from what I read above the town is in MI? I'm still not sure.

Yay, small town bullshiat.  6 or 7 ears ago, the county was going to re-zone my part of The Sticks from unzoned to low density residential.  Someone from a little city showed up to the county meeting to say some property owners in our area might want to join their city but they currently didn't have enough functioning staff to do anything about it.  So the county decided to leave our particular chunk as unzoned until the City of Bumfark could get their act together and reach out to said property owners.  That was years ago and I haven't heard a word from either the county or the city of Bumfark.  So I guess we're still Monkey Knife Fight territory.

I think it was a sheriff around us managed to get his POST certification suspended pending review (where he was certain to lose it), which meant he could no longer act as sheriff. He refused to resign and due to some technical issue there was nothing to be done except keep paying him until the next election.
