I agree with what White has to say until the third party bullshiat reared it's ugly head.  I've been seeing this sentiment a lot lately.  A third party would only strengthen the Republicans.  They would absolutely love it if the Dems split.  They would never lose another election.

It's exactly what the Republicans want.  How do people not see this?

Go on, you can't actually believe that. If the Greens had any meaningful influence on the elections, we'd be able to name who their last candidates were. Besides, if the Greens are "taking" votes from the Democrats, the Libertarians are "taking" far more away from the Republicans.* In 2016, the Libertarian candidate received enough of the overall percentage of nationwide electorate support during the primaries that he should have been invited to the debates, except the news media had raised the qualification bar from what it had been back in Perot's day and made it more exclusionary. If they hadn't done that, even though Harry Johnson (or whatever he was called) wasn't a great candidate, he probably would have won over enough of Trump's support to actually split the conservative vote. After all, Libertarians are basically just Republicans who aren't afraid to admit they're only in it for themselves, so an R jumping lines to vote L isn't as big of an ideological shift as a D voting L.

* FYI: Unless you hold to the Trumpublican belief that the major parties are "owed" your votes, you shouldn't think anyone can "steal" votes from them. Our democracy is based on the principle that you're free to vote for whoever you want, even if they're completely unqualified assholes, and no candidate or party can claim your vote as their entitled and expected property. Votes can only be stolen by actually tampering with the ballots. If you were planning to vote for Candidate A but then Candidate B impressed you more, B didn't steal your vote from A, because it never belonged to A. Your vote solely belongs to you.

That feels true, except if you look at the numbers in swing states, only half of the Green voters switching their vote to Clinton would have led to a Clinton victory. Instead, they did what Putin wanted (and why he's been backing the Green party) - split the Dem vote enough for a radical populist to take over.

/Russians have always been smart enough to back extremists on both sides. That's just good destabilization right there.

You're still assuming that the Green votes would automatically go to the Democrats if there was no Green party. But nearly all third party voters know their candidate has no chance, and what they're typically doing is placing a protest vote. The Libertarians received higher than average support in 2016 due to voters who rejected both Trump and Hillary, and without a third party option, it's more likely they would have used the write-in option or not voted at all.

Also, you're favoring the idea that voters should have less choices so they can be more easily steered towards one of two options. That's a very undemocratic, pro-monopolistic point of view. But even if we assume your theory is correct and an absence of third parties would redirect those votes to the top two, Hillary would have gained an approximate 1% of the popular vote while Trump would have received an extra 3%. Instead of swinging the election to Hillary, it would have given Trump a miniscule lead in the popular vote.

The results of 2016 had far less to do with any conspiracies or Russian plots than the fact that we had two of the most hated Presidential candidates in US history, and they both energized the hell out of the other side. Had either party presented a less polarizing choice, there would have been no contest. Note that despite the Russians having four years to improve on whatever election shenanigans they'd pulled, and Trump building a bizarre cult of personality around himself, Trump still decidedly (and yes, it was fully decided, conspiracy loons) lost against Biden, who wasn't the strongest candidate but had the advantage of not being an absolutely repulsive sack of human garbage and excrement. Our electorial system is flawed, but it works. Even when it doesn't result in the President we wanted.

2022-06-26 11:52:23 AM
When you're hating Trump remember he's no worse than the people who support him, or the marketers who shaped the GOP into what it is today.
