Is it safe to swim in?  "I've swum around blooms before, and it's really quite good fun," she said.

Swimming in itchy water and jellyfish in Morton Bay, not as much fun.

Oh, reminds me of a nightime acid trip I had at the beach. The biolumes were active and every step I took in the sand was like a galaxy exploding under my feet. The waves were lined with glowing foam that led tracers off into the night sky forming all kind of strange shapes. Trippy. Or was it all just the acid?

/It wasn't, people who weren't on acid were seeing it too.

This wasn't at Daytona beach about...15 years ago, was it?

Had the exact same experience, we had a couple sober friends with us who confirmed we were not just seeing things.  It was amazing.

So the flashes result from the bacteria responding to physical touch.  Sorta like billions of tiny chemical screams of pain.  Those people are monsters!

/or is it tiny chemical screams of pleasure?
