LOL.  You think the Supreme Nazis are going to allow Blue states to protect women?  Not a farking chance.

2022-06-24 8:53:47 PM
That's just going to dilute the blue vote and make the issue less urgent for those who move. coontil the GOP takes power and implements a federal ban)

Get out while you still can.  There are free states with open arms.

2022-06-24 9:59:24 PM
And Google will still continue to contribute to the Republican Party which made all this possible.

2022-06-24 10:13:06 PM
This is appreciated but it's not the way.

This will increase inequality, classism, and it will placate a huge swath of otherwise politically active people, leaving the most vulnerable of us with a diminished voice. Again.

Thank you for filling a gap, corporations, but you cannot be the ones to secure our rights if you are not going to secure all our rights.

GardenWeasel: And this is why that is a bad idea

https://news.yahoo.com/josh-hawley-says-abortion-ruling-193704754.html

Just cause Hawley makes a prediction doesn't make it true.

There are a whole lot more Americans who want legal abortions than illegal ones, and right now the number of forced birth states is 17 vs 33 free states.

2022-06-25 1:16:28 AM
Of course, the new thing is going to be airport abortion clinics. Part of a Southwest Airlines package.

2022-06-25 1:17:29 AM
I just want to make sure everyone knows to check OpenSecrets to see who's covering their asses and who's at least giving money to fight the fight.

Surprisingly, on this one, Google (or at least Alphabet Inc) isn't an evil two-faced org that's just covering their asses (like Dick's).

Then work to get supermajorities in 33 state legislatures and federal delegations. This isn't a joke, I'm not being snarky, I'm being serious. Get out the vote and make little Josh eat those words.

You'd need one more of the abortion states to bring an abortion amendment to a vote...and then another four to ratify it.  Very tall order.

Best hope, and start now. They needed decades to get the ban back... unfortunately I think it's going to take as long  (maybe a bit less) for it to be legal again... and this time do it in a much tougher way to stop... with an amendment.

Good. Google employees should be encouraged not to reproduce.

Although Massachusetts has some of the best and broadest abortion protections in the nation, I must inform Googlers considering moving here that everything is expensive, housing is hard to find, winters are cold, traffic is bad, everyone is rude, møøse bites kan be pretty nasti, and there are a lot more asshats than you'd expect in such a ridiculously blue state.  Best to keep away.

Small gesture too late.

Damage done.

Now what?

Well, I for one am shocked that a corporation wouldn't want employees to take maternity/paternity leave.

THIS ^^^^^  has been the plan all along.  Its like having the Center/left folks put themselves in a ghetto.

I love that all these big name companies are announcing programs like this. Like, it's nice and all, but Google already offers relocation services for.... The entire world...if you are good enough to get hired at Google.

Even without the abortion thing, Google would arrange for employees to transfer offices. And the wages for these companies are such that the employees are all making bank anyway.

A lot of these big name companies only have offices in a handful of states too. Making it even less practical. When the majority of employees are already in a firmly blue tech state, it's an offer that only applies to a small percentage of people.

Google offering this is.... Mostly just a gesture.

Now*McDonald's* or Walmart doing it - that would be amazing. They have locations everywhere and low paid staff who would actually need support to move.

2022-06-25 10:08:41 AM
Also, strictly from a cost perspective, it's cheaper to pay an employee to move and abort than to pay for maternity leave. It's literally a cost saving measure for companies with generous paid maternity programs.

HawHaw is dumb. The red states have the same number of Senators regardless.  In theory blue voters leaving could swap Representatives, but be realistic.  They're not going to leave in enough numbers to sway urban areas.

2022-06-25 11:59:57 AM
This is good, but you know what would be better (and more impactful?)

Google pulling out of & not doing business with states that revoke reproductive human rights.

This? This says "sure, we'll still do business with you - we're happy to take your money." This says "sure, we'll still hire your people - we'll just help them escape you if they so desire."

Might as well just give up right now, then. No point in fighting.

I donate quite a bit, but local action?  I don't feel like being run over, shot, or burned out of my house, thanks.

Coat hangers are scary enough a consequence, but on top of that, if history is a guide, will be assaults outside of clinics in abortion-allowing States, and firebombings.  Illinois, New Mexico and Colorado in particular are grave danger of this.

Fight, but fight differently.  The Supreme Nazis indeed won't give an inch, or have any empathy.  So community organization, legal funds, etc become crucial.
