Do sometimes high-end cars in major crashes get rebuilt?  I've heard of such a thing before, but I don't know cars very much.

I suspect that even if they did get rebuilt after a major crash most of the value would still have been lost.

Would you pay 1/4 mil for a car with a salvage title?

As an auto industry veteran, I would advise that you never do that.

The real money is gone.  What you can have is a real great exotic to drive, just don't ever think it will go up much in value.

This. I'd certainly consider buying one but it would depend on the model car, and who did the rebuild.

It was offspring of the owner.  The owner is vacationing with someone only 25% older than that offspring.

Unlikely it was dealership staff as they get hosted at events to personally experience the capabilities of the vehicles they're working on or selling.

I love it. A loose napkin accidentally flies out an open window, cops are calling me an hour later based on a partial plate from a "concerned citizen" to threaten fines if I don't go back and take care of the litter.

Here they got the whole car, VIN and all, and days later are "still trying to contact the owner"?

I got to sit in a Ferrari F40 around 1995 and of course I loved it, at the same time I said this is kind of drappy.
All the panels were wavy, the rear plastic glass engine cover was totally hazy and could barely see the enngine and the dashboard looked like the speaker box that I made for my own car when I was 16 years old.
If it was a race car fine, but it wasn't.  I lost respect for Ferrari that day. Even sitting in the coolest car.

Yeah, but even with a >1M viewer YouTube channel, a sponsor, and parts deals for some of the misc stuff for placement (ads) that rebuild probably was about break even. Without all the rebuild related income you'd almost always be better of just buying new and avoiding the risk and hassle.

I have a customer with a McLaren 360. Said he test drove a 600 and it was too much like a race car. Apparently this guy didn't get the message. Saw one of the few McLaren F1's at the gas station I work at many decades ago. Solo center racing seat in front, bench seat in the back, for the kids. Very cool cars.

For anyone who has driven an exotic car, I have some questions....

Do we see so many of these cars crashed because:
A: These cars are so hard to handle because the speed increases too quickly to react.
B: Even though you've spent a million dollars on it, the suspension, tires, and brakes are inadequate.
C: They drive so differently from a "normal" car, people just cant handle them.
D: Visibility issues.
E. They are horribly uncomfortable, and that is a distraction.
F. Driver overconfidence
G. Yes. All of the above.

G. Yes. All of the above

Honestly speaking, they're not worth the aggravation, expense or the hassle (especially in places with crumbling roads). It's like having a pool, it's nice for *others* to have them and you get to enjoy them once in a while.

With that money I could get 200k beaters with heaters. Drive one, smash it up, then abandon it. The only two foreseeable problems would be parking and hiring someone to transfer plates everyday.

Having driven very powerful and expensive cars before, I'd state they handle like a relaxing orgasm if you drive safely, at the speed limit, and defensively.
That is the best feeling you can get in one of those babies. Knowing you are treating it right, and it's there to make sure you have a good time*.

My Saturn Ion is tricked out but I don't go racing it.it's merely modified to be safe. Yes it accelerates faster than factory says it should.  But I need to merge on highway ramps sometimes. And it has heavy duty rotors and pads. Because I drive over steep mountains. In very happy I found a wholesaler what sells rattle cans of my color for a buck each. Because I want it to look somewhat respectable for the class reunion. Now, I could drive any of a variety of vehicles to that. But it's a 3 hour drive. I need mileage, and a heater, and a.c, and to he able to park in the city. And not have it stolen or broken into. Perfect for that.
Also, I'm quite comfortable with what the good lord gave me.

* good advice if you find yourself in a relationship, too.

Doesn't matter if the OEM recertifies it, it has a crash in its record, forever altering it's value for collectors. People like pristine things. If you plan to actually drive it you won't care.

F40's are.most certainly race cars.  No radio, no A/C, racing seats/belts, etc.  It was meant to be in a Ferrari challenge series of races.  It also just happened to be the 40th anniversary of the company.

Maybe for a normal car, not for a low-volume car that was one of the originators of the hypercar class.  Especially with paperwork (and video documentation) of the rebuild.  Plus, now it even has an interesting history, which adds to the allure.

The main reason you see a lot of pictures of crashed exotic supercars rather than station wagons is because they look cooler and people enjoy the thought of stupid rich people breaking their nice things that we don't have.
