How soon after the Republicans steal the next election do you think it will be before they declare war on Canada?

I wish I was joking about that.

So?

I can't think of anything funny, smart, obnoxious, or deliberately obtuse to say about this.  Mostly I'm sad.

Mr.Tangent: Then they better get with the NDP and put it into law..they won't..but should.

Yes. But no? But kinda?

Even the Conservatives say the Supreme Court decisions, and the provinces all making abortion part of medical procedures (as opposed to criminal law), is enough. There are no serious challenges here. And my textbook (Irwin Law) about "fundamental rights" under the Charter includes abortion as just a given obvious meaning - like it needs no specific legislation because frankly there is no other way to interpret the Charter except to include it under security of the person and other bits and bobs from Sec 7.

There is some worry that an attempt to legislate would take abortion from "Well duh obviously abortion is available, with infinite reasons basically," to "Here are reasons now in legislation and so there are a limited number of reasons to make abortion legal and oh yeah let's hope this doesn't get overturned by some future whackjob ince it is no longer a fundamental right but just another law."

I know that's esoteric, but those're the substantive reasons preventing any legislation.

When right wingers steal enough elections they'll make travel to Canada illegal with this as the excuse.

Because right wingers are farking fascist trash intent on ruining America and the world. Everything they are and love should be farking bulldozed into the sea and they should all move to Afghanistan and Russia where people share their orc values. My WWII pilot antifa grandfather spinning in his grave now as his generation's kids all turn into nazis.

If you want a passport, you really should apply soon.  There's been crazy delays due to COVID and backlog.

This decision would have killed me 15 years ago. I miscarried, and my stupid body refused to evacuate it without help. That procedure is now illegal in the majority of states.

F*ck every single goddamn conservative in this effing country. I'm done trying to convince you that other people exist. My fault for assuming you had a sliver of humanity buried deep inside you somewhere. I should have realized sooner you're all 100% shiat.

If they would let me and I had a little more money I would totally move to either Victoria or Vancouver BC permanently. Of course I'd have to leave my wife here because she thinks Canada is too cold.

I really think I was accidentally born in the wrong country. I tried to explain that to Canadian customs the last time I visited but for some reason they didn't see it my way.

FTFA: "Singh said, with abortion access soon to be limited in some U.S. states, including in states that border Canada, there could be a run on abortion providers here as American women flee to friendlier jurisdictions for the medical procedure. He said Canada should be prepared."

Once again a poweful reminder that the United Sates has no greater nor steadfast ally than Canada, especially in our moments of need. No snark. Thank you Canada. Sometimes our country really doesn't deserve you, though our citizens in need do.

As a Canadian I think we should start giving any American women fleeing this sh*t emergency refugee status with a fast track to residency.

When the leak occurred I also started saying a new underground railroad may need to be set up from the south to get women out before they get imprisoned for having an abortion or simply miscarrying. AKA Political asylum.

I am very angry at the US today. This is NOT f*cking cool and will just emboldened our whackos to try reopening the debate up here. hey will fail of course but it will not be good for the body politic.

I suspect the GOP are already started to experience the negative consequences of outlawing abortion.
They said they wanted to unleash the storm.

I've been seriously considering moving out of the country for a few months now, and this week's SCOTUS decisions (plural) has only intensified that. I can work remotely, and my company does have an office in Toronto, which would make getting permanent residency more likely.

I joked earlier today that I can't even hope for my home state (California) to secede, because it's running out of water and is always on fire now. Despite the state being one of the largest economies in the world, it wouldn't survive on its own.

I totally admire your optimism and wish I could bring myself to the same levels. November is a long ways away and unfortunately I'm not confident that we will show up in high enough numbers where it counts to keep at least the House from flipping.

But please, by all means, prove me wrong. I'm begging everyone in areas of the country where there is a chance to go Blue to turn out and vote.

They'll just have their puppet maga court declare officially that right wingers must never suffer consequences of their actions. They already rarely do, but they'll make it so that they never do, officially. It's coming.

If you're not a maga chud, it's time to start planning an emergency exit strategy, bug out bag, passport, stash of stable foreign currency, etc.

No.  We'll get them up here and get them care and safety, but we cannot pull people who are likely to become solid left wing voters out of a nation that needs every left wing vote it can get to try and stop the bleeding and get shiat back on track.  Removing them from the US means it's more likely things get even worse and less way to stop it.

Americans are free to come up here for abortions now. They just would have to pay for it, same as any other medical procedure.

I get that it being political makes it more appealing to provide for free, and if there are doctors willing to donate their time for it, I have no issue, but there are also plenty of other life-saving procedures that poor Americans have no way to access. Are we going to provide all for them?

A state senator once used the threat of a nuclear strike as a trade negotiation tactic.  At the time, he was mocked by his peers.  Today, I'm reasonably sure the GQP would go with it and then start to insist the missiles launch.
