Inviting Greece into the EU was farking stupid. It's a borderline third world country. Western civilization may have started there, but they've been on a rough streak for about 2000 years since then.

Those two and the brother were perfectly cast.  My kids hated Jean Ralphio and tried to skip over every scene with him.  I explained to them they were supposed to hate Jean Ralphio and that's the brilliance of the writing and acting.  Appreciate the craft that makes you literally want to not watch it.  Know that at the end of every take, everyone on set busts out laughing at what assholes they're pretending to be.  I still think they skipped him when I wasn't around.

I thought the need for bailouts was caused by the Greek government borrowing huge amounts of money to support the lavish lifestyles of those who work in government, and that stopping all of that was a precondition of bailouts?

They had 16 previous chances to fix the problem.

Throw out the government and install a UN/EU conservatorship, backed by EU lawyers, accountants, and cops.

Prove to the folks with the money that you can manage it properly, and maybe we'll let you try again.

North Korea can occasionally field a sports team that wins a championship.

For those of you in Mississippi that can read, please explain the joke to those who can't.

Before the Russian invasion they were a massive producer of shiat the entire world needs. Food and oil. They were set to be a preeminent power in the region.

Greece is where Brits go for a vacation and think Majorca is quaint.

Before the invasion they were an economic basket case being propped up by the West as a counterweight to Russia.   Before the invasion Ukraine was in the middle of demographic collapse.

Shifting away from Russian controlled oligarchs has been a problem for the country. Why do you think an actor/comedian was President when it was invaded? Because the people were underserved.

Mismanagement and leadership struggles with puppets tied to the Russian economy tends to weigh one down like the albatross it is.

FWIW: Tax evasion is a global sport.
Every extra dollar added to the IRS' budget results in an extra 6 dollars of taxes collected.

Ah Greece, the libertarian utopia where taxes are optional and you just hope things will work out okay.

I read a book on the crash, several years ago, and the chapter on Greece was absolutely unbelievable.
People didn't pay taxes.
Businesses didn't pay taxes. All you needed was an 'insider', i.e. someone in the gov't or on the local level and you simply didn't have to pay taxes.
So then the gov't implements a small tax law...and the people simply ignore it.
So then the gov't starts taxing pensions (that EVERYONE gets, simply for existing)...and people freak the fawk out.
At this point. Germany steps in to help--no one else will--and gets Greece to start taxing the people and paying off small portions of their enormous debt. Germany fronts them a couple hundred million (IIRC--this is all from memory), despite Greece's debt being in the trillion(?) $$ range.
Greece takes the money and basically tells Germany to fawk off. Then it REALLY turns into a shiatshow.

Y'all should read up on it. It's mind-boggling.

I guess according to the government's CBO the current estimations are closer to to a $2.50 return per $1 spent.

the main point still stands, though.
