Legitimate concerns if they are simply going to be turned into Air BnBs

A Language Impact Assessment, submitted as part of the planning application, claims the development would "strengthen the Irish language and the Irish speaking community in Dingle" and proposes that appropriate planning conditions would be that "a minimum of 31 per cent of the dwelling houses shall be reserved for Irish speakers...

A fact so nice they cut and paste the same paragraph twice in the article, apparently.

Imagine if this sort of thing happened in  other European countries.  "English speakers only" would be treated as a racist and ethnocentric favouritism. Why is this acceptable here?

Native Irish speakers are not a different race or ethnicity from non-native speakers.

The Irish language was almost made extinct by the Brits.  There are government efforts to reverse this. It's coming back in Dingle.  (My cousins live there and speak it.)

/Another cousin got a tuition break to live in a dedicated Irish-speaking dormitory (Cork).

Pretty place, Cork. Mind you, it isn't Donegal, but it would definitely do.

As for speaking Gaelic... a good portion of it of it is a Gaelacht, so... yeah. Makes sense. Learn the language - keep hold of your culture.

The Repeated Meme: Native Irish speakers are not a different race or ethnicity from non-native speakers.

They certainly are different race and ethnicity from immigrants who will be put out by this decision.

"Oh, you're from Ukraine and managed to learn English as you fled a warzone as a refugee? Too bad. These houses are are for Irish-speakers only. If you don't speak Irish, you may as well get the hell out."

Ireland still only has a population of >5M people, which is ~60% of what it was pre-famine. That still blows my mind.
