Ukraine aid links

Arhat now feels like a lifetime ago (day 44), many of us felt helpless and listless at not being able to do more to help, so here's a list of things that we can do.

There are plenty of charities that could use your help, but even if you don't have spare cash lying about, there are still things you can do so keep reading

You can donate directly to Ukraine if you want to help them make more videos of tanks blowing up. (See 'military aid' below)

There are lots of humanitarian groups working to feed the displaced people and even their pets.  (See 'humanitarian aid')

And even if you're not in a position to give cash, you might be able to find a group that needs some volunteer help or attend a protest.  If you don't have a group in your area specifically helping Ukraine, you can likely still find other worthwhile causes.  And there are groups that have tasks that can be done online or over the phone without even leaving your home. (See 'other notes'). Even just calling politicians to remind them that we need to support Ukrainians.

You could even just call out dumbasses online who are spreading russian propaganda and otherwise spewing toxic crap.  And by ignoring or blocking the assholes on here who try that shiat.

And you can even support capitalism, and buy stuff made in Ukraine or are fundraisers for the war effort.  (See 'buying stuff')

This is in no way a comprehensive list.  This is just groups that Farkers have mentioned in past threads.  If you want a more comprehensive list, see https://supportukrainenow.org . They also have links to specific groups by country that you're coming from for protests, taking in refugees, etc.  You might also find interesting charities at https://www.reddit.com/r/ukraine/comments/tgc00n/want_to_support_ukraine_heres_a_list_of_charities/

If you're currently employed by a large-ish company, they may have a donation matching program.  You can check https://doublethedonation.com/but it's also worth contacting your HR to ask even if they're not listed there.

You can search Charity Navigator ( https://www.charitynavigator.org ) or GuideStar (https://www.guidestar.org/NonprofitDirectory.aspx) for terms like Ukraine, and look find a group near you that needs extra hands.  If you can't find a Ukraine specific one, pick another one with a mission that you support.

If you're a US citizen, call your congress critters and let them know how you feel:  (202) 224-3121.  Or if you want to sponsor refugees:  https://ukraine.welcome.us.  But you may want to try to find an NGO, as if you directly sponsor them you're financially responsible for two years.  (So tell your representatives to give them refugee status)

If you would like to avoid doing business with companies still operating in russia, seehttps://www.dontfundwar.com

If you use streaming music services, search for Ukrainian artist playlists, so you'll give them a fraction of a penny and maybe find some new artists to support more directly.

If you watch cam sites, consider supporting Ukrainians (although some may currently be displaced, others may tag Ukraine to show support because they're from neighboring countries, and some of the most in need of support may not currently have internet access; I don't have any sort of definitive list)

There are also efforts to DDoS Russian websites, but I'm not linking to them to avoid risking the mods removing this whole list.

Also see the official Ukrainian website on ways to support their effort:  https://war.ukraine.ua/support-ukraine/

I've finally settled on an estimate of what Putin is thinking. I've been waffling between leaving a legacy and keeping his image in front of the Russian people. He's acting very frantically, implying he needs it done right now, which would imply it's about keeping his poll numbers up now. But he's also taking a long time, trying for the whole banana, instead of shaving off bits for a quick poll bump.

I'm beginning to think that Putin is acting to keep his reputation, the way a strongman will, but that at this point, it's not about his poll numbers but about his legacy. He's doing this to alter his writeup in the history books that future Russians will read. But he is trying to do it fast because he needs to do it before his health problems do him in.

/I suppose the two are related.
//I'm probably not the first person to say this, but I'd like to discuss this angle.

⚡Russian State Duma approved law on parallel import
Now foreign-made goods included in government list can be "legally" imported into Russia without consent of the copyright holders.

The list of goods includes 96 brands including Apple, Samsung, cars and household appliances.

Ya, that's a good way to make sure those businesses *ever* want to do business with you again.

Are they deliberately trying to fark their country for the next 50 years?

None of the people making decisions in russia are looking further than immediate needs. The immediate need is to convince the populace of Moscow and Petrograd sanctions are not having any effect. If they have to violate international copyright agreements, they've decided they can deal with the consequences of that later- the important citizens in those two cities must be mollified now.

If the 'leadership' gives any thought to long-term consequences at all, they may be assuming Western businesses will be willing to forgive these transgressions for access to the 'russian market'. The roughly 150 million increasingly senescent people in russia are not a large enough market to pursue for most international companies- the more so as most of that population is widely scattered across Asia, with only about 20 million total in the two 'elite' cities. Worse, russia has made a point of proving neither government nor financial institutions can be trusted. At all.

The minor benefit of doing business with russia (access to roughly 20 million useful consumers) will be far outweighed by the demonstrated downsides (official corruption, organized crime, untrustworthy government institutions, etc), with the added penalty of getting punished in markets which matter (Europe, North America, China, India). Few businesses will think it profitable to ignore russian stupidity in exchange for a few million potential customers with a GDP of less than 1.5 trillion dollars if it may jeopardize doing business with major markets (Europe = 23.4 trillion, North America = 26.8 trillion, China = 17.4 trillion, and India = 3 trillion). Russia simply won't be worth the risks.

And the russians are doing it to themselves.

Thank for the clarification. earlier reports I saw merely stated "over disagreements
about suport for UA", and with the state of Italian politics (opaque to me) that was
not clear to me.

40 Dollars In A Checking Account: instead of shaving off bits for a quick poll bump.

You may be on to something. I think it's important to remember, however, that Putin is a dictator and does not have polls or numbers to worry about. Russia is not a democracy. He does not have to defend his position against anyone in an election.

I would not say that Putin is worried about the optics inside his own country ... he owns it already.

Yup.  The end consequences of this will be *far* worse than the Russian default in 1917.  It only took 6 decades for international businesses to start considering doing business with their government.

40 Dollars In A Checking Account: I've finally settled on an estimate of what Putin is thinking.

///Three for a free Ukraine.

My suspicion (and I'm not a Putin expert, a Russian expert, a military expert, or someone who stayed at a Holiday Inn Express last night) is that Putin has been planning to rebuild the Russian empire for decades. He wants to be the new Peter the Great.

He has been putting a plan for this into action, which included working to destabilize NATO and the western democracies through influence--he hijacked the Republican party, supported Tulsi Gabbard to split the Democratic vote, supported Le Pen in France, supported Brexit in the UK, and supported right-wing nationalism across the board. He probably had a great deal of assistance in this from China and Iran, who both have their own reasons for wanting to see the West weakened. He's also had a great deal of support from individuals in these Western democracies who're using the chaos for their own purposes.

His plan in the US bore fruit with the political divisions we have now. France is divided as well, with Macron unable to take a strong stance. Germany is waffling for various reasons. Brexit went through with the UK leaving the EU.

He did not get everything he wanted, but he ran out of time. His health problems forced his hand, so he invaded Ukraine hoping that he had done enough to prevent the West from organizing against him. Had he actually had a competent military force that could have performed a decapitation strike on the first day, then he probably would have been right, but corruption and incompetence and the strength of the defenders denied him that wish.

Now he is trapped. He cannot back down, because he's played all of his cards and put all of his chips in the pot. Any loss means a loss of his legacy. As the movie says, people are dumb, panicky animals, and we make bad decisions in panic--and it's even harder to make good decisions when you're trapped, panicking, and losing everything.

So he keeps playing the only cards he has: sending his troops into the meat grinder without real hope of success, threatening the world with nuclear war, and 'escalating to de-escalate' that is, do terrible things over and over again in the hopes that his enemies will back down.

He is trapped and no longer able to make any decisions. This will only end if he is overthrown or dies.

And it wasn't just time healing wounds for that.  They had to institute perestroika as well, which also accelerated the collapse of the USSR.
