Miami's No. 20 prospect made a bunch of history in a memorable performance:
• Since at least 1901, Encarnacion is the first NL/AL player to hit a grand slam, steal a base and record an outfield assist in his MLB debut.
• First Dominican-born player to hit a grand slam in his debut.
• Second Marlin to hit a grand slam in his debut, joining Jeremy Hermida (Aug. 31, 2005).
• Ninth Major League player since 2000 whose first hit was a grand slam.

I love MLB stats.  I'm surprised they didn't mention what astrological sign was in retrograde during his at-bat or what the cloud coverage was like during his stolen base.

If anything farks the Mets this year (and it's the Mets so it's inevitable) it's their bullpen.

I dont follow baseball but MLBs fascination with stats is glaringly demonstrated in the article. I find that fascinating.

I've heard it said that the only institution with more raw historical statistical data than MLB is the US Census Bureau. The Elias Sports Bureau has always been a dream job.

People love to make this joke. "Hit a grand slam, stole a base, threw a guy out" is a good day and not really obscure in terms of made up stats.

Would "hit a grand slam, steal a base, get ejected" be the baseball equivalent of the Gordie Howe hat trick?

I think home run, stolen base, ejection works.

I watched Johnnie Lemaster hit an inside-the-park homer in his first MLB at bat at Candlestick Park.   He really should've retired right then and there.

We also would have accepted "hit a grand slam, steal a base, punched Jose Bautista."
