That horse left the barn when we started producing EM radiation.  Any alien species that can cross interstellar distances, doesn't need us to "answer" to figure out we are here.

We're receiving our first interstellar broadcast from the alien planet! And...it's.....it's.....

It's scrambled cable-tv pornography. But, from outer space.

It would not end well for us once they realized we are an incredibly hostile species.

Deposec interstellar prince Xorlax needs our help to regain the blueprints of the fusion-zero point-dark matter-orgone energy generator which he will share with earth.  He just needs us to send him 100000 quatloos to secure the plans and will happily share the information once regained.

Human-made signals are not a problem, they fade into background noise surprisingly quickly.

Aliens could spot us the same way we are currently looking for them - spectrographic analysis of their planetary atmospheres.  This planet has has some funky atmospheric chemistry screaming "organic life lives here" for billions of years.  Of course we have added industrial pollution in the past 100 years screaming "technology in use" on top of that.

We're still safe - the distances between stars protects us.

Ok, this factoid is regurgitated every time this topic comes up.
But how far do our broadcasts really reach?
Maybe someone more knowledgeable could weigh in on this, but I'm pretty sure what little leaves the ionosphere blends into the universe's background noise due to divergence loss and all kinds of electromagnetic space farkery WELL before 100 light years. Probably even more so with modern low energy digital broadcasting.

"...- .--...--. ..---.. ----... --- ... ..---...---...-.."

The alien code has been deciphered and reads:

Papa ooo mow mow papa ooo mow mow

From what I've read, our telecommunications broadcasts can't be detected more than about a light year out from Earth because beyond that distance, the signals are indistinguishable from background noise. No one outside of the solar system is watching our TV shows or picking up Rush Limbaugh (thank the gods).

However, signals from our military radar used to detect and track ICBMs can be seen from many light years away, but I'm not sure what the likelihood of it being detected by other civilizations would be, since those signals tend to be very directional and short-lived, and I don't know how often they're actually using the things anyway. Maybe someone who knows more about the use of this type of radar could chime in.

I'm reading The Dark Forest by Cixin Liu right now so I'm really getting a kick out of these replies.

Military radar is used everywhere on the planet that rotates so radar is in many directions.
Still, it hasn't gone far in the cosmic scheme,

If you pile on enough assumptions and sprinkle some math on top of it, you can make up any bullshiat you want and call it "science."

At least, that's what the aliens told me over the radio.

AdmirableSnackbar: It would not end well for us once they realized we are an incredibly hostile species.

I always think it's silly when people declare...well... anything about our species in the context of aliens. We have no frame of reference.

There could be a million advanced species. We could literally be the least hostile, most hostile or exactly the median.

We might even be so different than concepts like hostility might not even apply.

Modern society: If there's life out there in the void surely they're just as horrible as we are.

I really wanted to like the "the 3 body problem" but it's just a game theory series. You could watch the 2nd and 3rd season of "survivor" and get the gist of the plot.

I have my own version of the Drake equation that proves I'm not a virgin.

Statistically an impossibility, just plug in these numbers to the equation....

It is reasonable to presume that anyone capable of crossing such distances does it by bending the cosmos over a barrel and is therefore capable of perceiving things in ways that we haven't even fantasized about, and distances we'd presume are impossible, at resolutions that'd pop our heads like grapes.  I am so sick of this pseudojourno crap that drives all the clicks these days.

Or they dial up the six-digit combination and push the yellow button.

Curious, for us 6 digits is one million. How many digits do you think the aliens use? Semi-serious question.

Digits as in fingers. We have 10.
