They don't have screens on windows over there, do they?

We got one of these last year.

When you hit the fly it sounds like one of those outdoor bug zappers.

aside from requiring foinfing D-cell batteries (at least my friend's "as seen on TV!!!" one did) - those things work so farking well, and are so viscerally satisfying!

someone should really produce a usb-rechargeable one. or is there now?

I bought a pair of these, one for the deck and one to swap between kitchen/bath as needed. and they do ok, even on flies.

or for smaller stuff like gnats/fruitflies, there's always the well known ancient method: bowl (or non-shallow plate) of warm water, splash of cider vinegar, several drops dish detergent, mix slightly.

They're pretty uncommon in most of Europe. Don't know why. Where I live it's usually too cold to have the windows open anyway, but when it does get warm, no one has air conditioning or even a fan, so the windows are open all the time. We don't really have a fly problem, but the occasional wasps are pretty annoying.

Bug Assault!

I've used one, I need to get one myself.

But then I'd probably intentionally leave the screen door open just to have something to shoot at.

What i want to know is:
I set up a plate for the flies and they still come for my plate! No sense of the easier meal. WTF

Seriously. Don't leave food or its remains out. It's not that hard. The only food left out at my house is the cat's kibble. That actually sits up in his cat tree so the dog won't gobble it.

I live on a slab foundation house in South Carolina. I see maybe one fly a year, and maybe one cockroach a week durning summer - usually around the dishwasher. We pre-clean the dishes before putting them in the washer because it's not a fancy dishwasher, and  it may be days before we fill it.

I've never had a bug treatment at the house in the 14 years I've lived here.

The only other thing I do is leave spiders in peace, and say hello to lizard frends when I see them outside. The best bug killers are free. They are so effective I don't even have noticeable gnats in the yard.

My wife keeps things spotless in our house. Seriously. You could do surgery in here. But one summer we had sugar ants. We tried everything. Including dusting the perimeter with boric acid crystals. Finally, we hired an exterminator who tracked the ants to a hill 100' from the house.
