Seems an odd choice, considering that virtually everyone disliked her term as mayor. I get that that's kind of Biden's thing, I guess... if everybody is unhappy with you then you must have done something right, or some similar platitude about compromise and comity.

But he's tapping her to join the Office of Public Engagement. Per TFA:



The role is integral to developing Biden's policies and then convincing the broader Democratic coalition that the president is charting the right approach.

The stakes are high: Bottoms will be responsible for navigating divergent policy goals between progressives and centrists ahead of what's expected to be an ugly midterm cycle for Democrats.


But let's listen to Bottoms, in her own words, describe her experience being Mayor of Atlanta and part of why she decided to resign:


She admits that being mayor was never a great fit for her personality - "an introvert masking as an extrovert" is how she describes herself, someone who would "much rather be somewhere reading a book than sitting at a party." The gulf between her temperament and the demands of a job that is usually held by people she calls "social sponges" only got wider in the past year.

I just don't see this as a good fit. Her job will be to unite progressives and centrists within the Democratic coalition through social engagement, something she not only failed spectacularly to do as Mayor but also says she doesn't particularly like and doesn't think she's particularly good at.

It's weird how Biden keeps enlisting the help of mayors hated by their constituents and his poll numbers keep declining.

Also, if they're truly looking for the "right message" for November, actions speak louder than words. People who are working for starvation wages, losing their homes because rent is increasing massively, seeing their kids' schools defunded while police and military get even more funding, etc don't want to hear any message other than "I am happy to be here signing legislation/EO that fixes these problems." Anything less is not a winning message.

People need tangible actions, not empty words.

Cedric Richmond left congress to serve in this role for barely over a year. Richmond carried the Democrats' congressional baseball team. Big loss.

Everyone disliked her?  Not this Georgian. She was one of my favorite mayors during the peak of covid.

If she recognizes her inadequacy and works on it, is better than others who don't recognize it and don't work on it.

We got ourselves in a situation where our leadership selection process selects for people skills such as getting along and saying yes, looking nice, puts a higher priority over deep thinking(especially on the Republican side). When the world is going to hell, it's better to have smart people than nice people.

Hence the qualifier, "virtually everyone."

Nothing I've said about her should be taken as a reflection of her credentials, capability, or competency. She wasn't my Mayor and I only see what makes national news; I didn't live every day in her city. Perhaps she was fantastic.

But it seems pretty evident that she failed to achieve appeasement of both the progressive and moderate factions, and appears to have had no measurable success in uniting them together under a common cause.

I had one once. It was rather large. Lancing would not have helped. Doctor had to slice into it to let the pus out. It was so big and painful I couldn't sit and had to go to the school infirmary. This was back in college.
