Is the problem that the browns might still need someone to play qb this year

Dude is going to get paid a ridiculous amount of money to sit on the Cleveland bench for a year, isn't he?

I think if they hold a raffle for the fans, we could all chip in about $1 each and pay off his salary to make all this bullsh*t stop.

If there is one football organization that can go toe to toe with the Brown's incompetence it would be the Panthers

No. I don't think they'd let him into the stadium if... oh you are talking about mayfield.

Not likely. In the end, somebody's going to have to play QB.

The Browns have to pay his salary regardless.  Get a pick for him and have Carolina pay him league minimum

Examples of why quarterback is the most overrated position in sports as far as success is concerned.

Not to say that it doesn't help, but a dominant NBA player is far more important to his team's success than even the best quarterbacks. Hell, often the #2 guy on an NBA team is more important. You need too much around you in football for one guy to make that much of a difference.

Friday some guy on Jim Rome show was makign the case that, I forget which team, I think Carolina, was basically the front runner for Mayfield, but the thing is they're gonna wait out the Browns releasing him, versus signing him at his contract price.  i don't dick about the salary cap but the gist was basically, "why pay him $21M per year when if you wait, you can get him at maybe $15-18 per year?  it's just a waiting game."

course with two new lawsuits, you have to wonder if the NFL suspends Watson and thus the browns keep a pissed off Mayfield.  who knwos.

Its Cleveland. Didn't they pay Brock Osweiller to sit on the bench for a year.

Or was he just on their cap for a year with some kind of minimum salary

This excludes handing over the first fully guaranteed contract to a QB as well.

You're close. The Texans paid Cleveland in draft picks to pay Brock Osweiler in money and then immediately release him.

Vikings' first contract to Kirk Cousins would like to disagree with this statement.

As this is the Browns, I expect them to trade Mayfield, eat a portion/all of the salary, only get a 4th rounder in return, and have Watson be suspended for 2+ years the after the trade.

That was a very good contract for Cousins, but it wasn't a full guarantee.

It doesn't matter if they need a QB.  Baker's not gonna play for them ever again.  He's basically in the same position as Watson was this time last year...except without the assault allegations.

/At least, none that we know of...

In March 2018, Cousins signed a three-year deal worth a total of $84 million. While the yearly rate isn't exceptional for a QB, it was the NFL's first ever fully guaranteed contract, making the deal historic.

Well, it depends.  Browns are holding onto him (and have, for the past 2 months) entirely because they don't want to pay his salary.  No team is desperate enough yet.  They're hoping that come training camp/preseason, someone loses their starter to injury or terrible play enough that a team becomes desperate and the Browns get the leverage back.

But in the event that doesn't happen AND Watson gets suspended for a decent amount of time... Baker will absolutely want to suit up for the team.  If no one wants him at this juncture, you think they will after he sits out a year?  It's absolutely a good idea for Baker to play and prove himself.

Maybe. Has Mayfield said he absolutely won't play for the Browns yet? I know he's requested a trade, but I can't recall if I've heard whether he has said he will refuse to play.

My understanding is that it had the most guaranteed money and years for a QB. But it wasn't all guaranteed.

That's why the Watson deal has angered up so many teams, it set a precedent

Either way, it's a feat that only one or two players have managed.

And it's a shame that Watson is one of them

He'd be an absolute farking idiot to sit out a year.  as weak as this year's QB class is said to be, if Watson for whatever reason were unable to play, and Mayfield threw a hissy fit and wouldn't suit up, that'd be a huge red flag for every NFL team, if he were to sit out in a fit of petulance.

to my knowledge no, but I havent exactly been keeping track of it.  but yeah i know he requested a trade and the Browns are wisely excusing him from camp.

They'd sooner start Brisket than Baker if Deshame Cosby is suspended.

I mean yeah I would love the story of how the Clowns signed Rapey Watson by giving away the farm, he ended up in cuffs and couldn't play, and then Baker leads the Browns to an undefeated season and Superb Owl win.

I think that's a half truth. The impact a good or very good QB will have is overrated (though don't tell that to the Rams). But a not-so-good QB can have a BIG impact (actually maybe this is where the Rams fit).

I'd agree with that. And the way the sport is played and practiced, it's a lot harder to replace a QB having a shiatty night than just about anyone else in any sport. It also usually means that in spite of a shiatty night, the backup option is generally not ready, whereas second team NBA players may struggle a bit to get rhythm but they're always game ready.

I'm looking forward to the "at the massage parlor with Deshaun Watson" commercials.
