Think of the stocks won't you?  Those poor rich people will barely be able to afford the price of a trip to space now.

I don't know why you guys think only the rich people invest in the stock market. Most people with careers have 401K, including me.  Are you all rooting for us to lose a large chunk of our retirement funds?

True, but while I'm down 12% since the start of the year I won't be retiring for another 15+ years.  By then most of my funds will be in more stable securities like bonds.  Historically speaking I'll make that 12% and then some in that time so for now I'll keep throwing money at it since I'm getting it at a discount.

yes, I got out of stocks at S&P 4600, eying up 3400 to jump back in. I know, I know.  Things were feeling really jerky there for a while and I got nervous.  Maybe I can pull it off once.

Because people around here are morans.  Rich people will be rich regardless of what the market does.  When the market goes down, it kicks the middle class in the balls harder than anyone.  They're the ones that will lose jobs.  They're the ones that will lose on any investment they made.  But her derr rich people!

You can throw 10k a year into treasury bonds and one type has like a 9.6% interest rate compounded semiannually. Only until october

Yes. They are.

There is small, but vocal group of extremely bitter losers on here that absolutely hates anyone who has enjoyed even the most modest amount of success.

They have convinced themselves that success is impossible without exploitation and privilege. So if you have any, you must not deserve it.

It's never guaranteed to be stable but my 401(k) is down 2% today but my child's 529 which is mostly bonds now was only down 0.7%. Neither is particularly good but since I have to pay tuition in a few months I'd rather be in a position to hold on to what I have.

Its not about the rich. The rich are going to be just fine, regardless of whatever it is that I do.

This kind of class warfare is dangerous. The rhetoric is always about the nobility and the ultra wealthy, but it ends up pitting the lowest of the peasants against the slightly better-off peasants.

Its kind of like the French Revolution. We think of it as the people killing all the elites, but the reality is that they only got a couple of them. Most of the people killed were peasants with two burlap sacks of turnips, or whatever it took to be considered French Middle Class.

Our situation is more like what the soviets did to the Kulaks. They gathered up every drunk loser and pathetic failure they could find and convinced them that the Kulaks (any peasant who owned more than 8 acres) were responsible for their failures.

So the 1930's Soviet version of a Pol thread got all worked up and killed them all. Of course, the Kulaks were the only one's who were halfway competent at farming, so everyone starved.

I don't give a fark about the rich.

The real difference is that when regular people lose money they end up poor or delaying retirement forever.

The rich people can swoop in and buy up all sorts of stuff at huge discounts. And since they already have enough to retire anyway, is effectively risk free.

My CEO loses half his wealth on paper and he can still retire tomorrow, live like a King with unfathomable wealth. If he lost 75% of his wealth, he is still a billionaire.

His employees that will get laid off when that happens.... They will...

Lose their jobs, lose their healthcare, and watch their retirement date/quality of life drop like a rock.

Not only does this impact regular people, it impacts us more than actually rich people.

Better be careful what you wish for here.

Personally speaking this could be worse. Unpleasant as all heck, but this is the first chance in decades we have to unwind 50+ years of artificial wage stagnation. Keep in mind they've been profit taking this whole time, bleeding the average person, to try and enforce the status quo ante...

Now this is Canadian info... but let's have a look shall we:

Vanguard S&P 500: Down 2.91% today, down 20.38% YTD
Vanguard Canadian Bond ETF: Down 1.21% today, down 14.05% YTD
Vanguard Global Bond ETF: 1.68% down today, down 12.31% YTD

Yeah, bonds are doing better than stocks, but in a "only bleeding heavily" versus "bleeding profusely" manner.

Or not at all.  Economic downturns aren't evenly distributed.

My dad used to either be pulling in lots of overtime or laid off.  Very dependent on macroeconomic trends.

I have a boring federal government job.  It won't make much of a difference to me.
