Viruses aren't living.  Very high salt surfaces would inactivate enveloped viruses but most likely not affect encapsulated viruses.

This. It'd take about 2 days, according previous research, for dehydration to inactivate the virus.

Please don't lick communal salt walls. It's just... dumb.

there were salt licks for deer at the grocery store when i was a kid.  big stacks of them for sale.

obviously, I would go lick them much to the horror of my parents.

I'm not at all convinced by the second argument. Viruses can't reproduce. They require the mechanisms of a living cell to replicate them. On their own they're no more alive than a rock is alive. They're things, things composed of some of the chemistry of life that causes life to react to its presence in particular ways.

The problem with explaining this is that human language isn't suitable to explain viruses. Our language developed to describe human experiences and a human perspective. Viruses are so unlike us that it becomes nearly impossible to describe their nature and function in any detail without the words themselves anthropomorphising them.
