lindalouwho: What the actual f*ck!!?

Salt will absorb liquid (saliva) pretty quickly, but it can't kill a virus.

Yep. That's insane. Also, where's the health department on this one?

Himalayan salt has self-cleaning properties

No, it doesnt. It's just salt, folks. It's not magical. Salt is not a viricidal agent. Salt does not kill COVID-19.

the restaurant staff also wipe the wall clean regularly

...with what?

optikeye: FormlessOne: The only thing you need to know: Salt water is not effective against SARS-CoV-2. The only benefit you get from such preparations is the simple fact that you're gargling; salt itself provides zero benefit.

They're talking about a surface, made of salt. Not a gargle with a tsp in a glass of water.

It's a salty surface where your mRNA can find no purchase.

Yes. And as the virus can sit on that surface just fine, I'm not sure what you're trying to say...?

Seriously, salt does nothing for COVID-19.

Being denied moisture, the virus will die a lot quicker than usual, but not quick enough for the lickers.
Even if covid didn't exist, I would never ever do this. Yuck!!

You know that sour-smelling towel sitting in the dirty yellow water that they use to wipe down the seats and then wipe the table because they don't see a problem with wiping your table with a rancid ass towel?

Viruses aren't living.  Very high salt surfaces would inactivate enveloped viruses but most likely not affect encapsulated viruses.

wut

Dead things don't multiply, for starters.

Here's a fun article that argues both sides of this question.

This. It'd take about 2 days, according previous research, for dehydration to inactivate the virus.

Please don't lick communal salt walls. It's just... dumb.

I'm not at all convinced by the second argument. Viruses can't reproduce. They require the mechanisms of a living cell to replicate them. On their own they're no more alive than a rock is alive. They're things, things composed of some of the chemistry of life that causes life to react to its presence in particular ways.

The problem with explaining this is that human language isn't suitable to explain viruses. Our language developed to describe human experiences and a human perspective. Viruses are so unlike us that it becomes nearly impossible to describe their nature and function in any detail without the words themselves anthropomorphising them.
