...and nobody seems to notice outside the tennis world.

It's crazy just how good those 3 have been. And for how long.

Tennis used to be a young person's game, and I guess changing nutrition and sports science has turned that idea around

Yeah...but wear & tear and age catches up with them eventually. As Rafael Nadal is finding out:

the Joke will probably get #1 back after Wimbledon. Medvedev the Russian is banned from the event, and Zverev just had surgery on his right foot after tearing all three lateral ligaments during his French Open semifinal with Nadal, so he'll be out for awhile.

...derp, I just remembered that the ATP isn't awarding points for Wimbledon. never mind!!1

I'm guessing the lack of Wimby points will sway Nadal to sit out grass season to rest his foot. he's up two in total slams and certainly doesn't need the prize money, so there's not much incentive there. then again, he might play just because he's the consummate stubbornly bullish fighter that has served him so well for so long.

yeah, these days it takes around five years to transform one's body into peak tennis condition, and that can't really start until mid- to late-teens after growth spurts and such.

it's just bonkers that he's still playing, and even moreso that he's still at/near the top. there were all those predictions that his knees would end his career before he hit 30. I know he'd love to have a shot at more Olympic medals in Paris 2024, which will be played at Roland Garros.

Yet they're still winning Slams.

No, because Wimbledon is not awarding points this year.

Last year's points come off, however, and he won it.

Nadal has won the last two slams. The young guy was the one who's leg disintegrated. I forget the exact sick percentage of the last however many slams the three of them have won, but the two players who moved ahead of them in the rankings own one slam title between them.

Lol Nadal has more Slam titles since he last lost a match in a Slam than the two new kids have in their careers combined.

I bet more people could pick Nadal, Federer, or Djaowhatever out of a lineup than could pick Mike Trout.  Even if you limited it to Americans, I'd still take my side of the bet.

I kind of know what Mike Trout looks like. But I wouldn't know Daniil Medvede if he bit me in the ass.

I wouldn't.  Thick white guy describes about 10% of Americans.

The points don't work that way? He's up to 4 I think.

It was Sampras and Agassi before them, and McEnroe and Borg even before that. Seems like top flight tennis always has a dominant pair of players for a decade or two, then a period of turnover before the new generation takes their place.

/would be nice to see an American be dominant in men's tennis again
//Serena has had a great run on the women's side of things

rankings reflect the points earned over the last 52 weeks, and he missed half of last year.

He doesn't play enough tournaments.

Medvedev and Zverev are higher ranked because they play more tournaments, get deeper in them, and earn more points.

Tennis ranking points are similar to auto racing. You don't necessarily have to win the big ones to move up in the standings. You just need to be consistent and place well week after week, in each tournament.

Sports fans randomly know about sports they don't really follow. I know the Angels are on some crazy losing streak and I don't pay attention to regular season baseball, for example.
