Call me crazy, but fish is the last thing I seek out in fast food form.

Fresh fish only... that sh*t is f*cking disgusting.

If you enjoy it, fantastic. Good for you. You have no taste and you are a terrible person.

Probably a good thing it's not so available.   Krums ftw.

We have a place here that does fish and chips that is like half a side of cod in their light batter, but golden brown and so crunchy... fresh tartar sauce and the fries are perfectly cooked...

goddamn... I think I need to hit them this weekend.

I sound fat.

Unless you're getting off the dock, the fish you eat had probably been frozen.

Nope. I think the last one here (OKC) closed years ago. Maybe. There might still be one on N. Pennsylvania.

*Googles*

Well, shiat, there's 5 of them still here (in various suburbs). They all appear to be those 2 in 1 dealios, where 1/2 the menu is "seafood" and the other 1/2 is A&W.

So I could go to LJS, but I probably won't.

Even if it's straight off the dock it was probably frozen. And that's not a bad thing. Kills lots of parasites

The great thing about LJS is that it is awesome if you are backed up. Enjoy some of that crispy fried deliciousness and be close to a bathroom. It's not going to be in there for a long time.

In the Seattle area, Long John Silver's was heard of but never seen.  The only fast food fish & chips you could get were either Ivar's or Skippers.  Ivar's is still around but Skippers went out of business years ago, probably because they were way overpriced towards the end.  The only thing close to a proper Long John Silver's was the bastardized one that was part of a KFC in my home town.  Honestly, they can't hold a candle to Skippers.

Even then - fair heap of commercial fishing freezes them as they go on the boat

In North Canton, OH, there's one that shares a building with a Taco Bell.  And even though I know I could do better at practically any place with fish on the menu, and LJS is long, long, looooooong past its prime, damned if I don't get a craving from time to time.

The Culver's that recently opened in my area did not offer walleye during Lent.  Just regular cod.  Do they have to be around for a certain length of time, prove their worth so to speak, before they start offering walleye?

Any love here for Arthur Treachers?  We had one in town for a while in the late 70s and it was pretty good.  But my tastes may have changed in the intervening years...

I live in Tucson, so no. We had five, but the franchisee wanted healthier options, LJS said "lol", so the franchisee broke contract and started converting the restaurants to what he wanted. I think he did two before the whole operation sank. I never ate there, but by all accounts, it was awful, which is saying something considering what it was replacing. LJS apparently doesn't miss our revenue, because they haven't been back since (this was ten or so years ago).

Skipper's is way better. Sadly you never see 'em anymore...still see the anchor signposts out front and the obvious outline of the Skipper's logo on stuff that took over old locations here...usually porno stores or Diarrhea Dragon grade pan-asian restaurants now.

According to teh wiki, there's only one Arthur Treacher's left, and it's in Cuyahoga Falls.

Gawds. I haven't been to one since Boise , and that was in  79 or 80. I see an occasional h salt once in a while, but they always look like they are shut for the day.

H Salt was pretty good.

We stopped at a LJSs in Batavia, NY a few months ago.  They opened at 11:00 AM and we showed up at noon.  They seemed shocked to have customers that early and we had to wait 30 minutes for the oil in the deep fryer to warm up.

The floor was filthy with garbage from the night before.  The manager apologized and said that the night shift forgot to sweep up at the end of their shift.

Still, I waited because I wanted hush puppies.  They were good and I enjoyed them thoroughly, but will never go back there.  Another fast food memory that I can never return to.

There's a LJS right by my work, up until a month or so ago I hadn't even THOUGHT about them in probably 20 years. I might should maybe see what they have, honestly not sure if I've ever eaten at one

2022-06-07 8:25:54 PM
Havent seen one in years, id go if i could find one. Meanwhile we have several dining and drinking establishments that do some very good fish and chips.

Im gonna drag the air fryer in here, i buy swai filets for six bucks a pound.(cod is about 12 a pound) Egg wash and a seasoned breading, 13 minutes in the fryer at 375, its ok to put some tots in there too. Trying to get away from flour breading, it gets old fast and tempura batter doesnt air fry well.  Any ideas from our fish eating farks out there?  I don't deep fry anymore...

Decided to look into where the nearest Skipper's is, and the closest one to me in Tulsa appears to have closed around the time I moved here looking at the archival footage on Google Maps.  The one closest to my mom closed around the same time.  Which makes me wonder, what the hell happened in 2010 that caused them to implode?

They appear to license the brand and recipes out to other locations now, so the closest location to me is a Short Stop gas station in La Grande, OR, and the nearest real, actual Skipper's is Kennewick, Washington.  And to mom, it's a seedy convenience store in North Plains for a mini location and Hazel Dell, Washington for the nearest real one...  In every case, Skippers is good, but not "leave the neighborhood to get it" good...

Arthur Treacher's was way greasier than LJS. My ex-wife loved Treachers but we'd go there to eat and she would literally (yes, literally) peal off all the batter and eat just the fish. Was I embarrassed? You betcha. My ex was...peculiar...she would buy a can of tuna and "pick out the nasty parts" and end up with a teaspoon of "usable" tuna for hot dish, salad, etc.

Arthur Treacher's was my jam. But I will give LJS credit for employing Flaming Lips frontman Wayne Coyne. While working there, he endured a deadly robbery, and that no doubt informed his songwriting.

I would *KILL* for a LJS here in Seattle. I love their chicken planks and their batter crunchies.

Not enough places use batter - they use breading instead. Breading sucks ass.

And batter is so much easier too, it really boggles the mind. I mean, assuming they're actually doing them to order (obviously not fast food places). But it's like... So many less steps to make the batter (drake's/soda water or beer/s&p, done) AND to coat the thing you're frying.

Bring batter back 2022!

Have you tried the chicken strips at Skipper's?  I want to say they're based there... those strips with some malt vinegar is better than pretty much any fried halibut I've had, almost as good as their salmon and chips basket.

Just...don't take the drive through if there's literally anybody ahead.  It's like Burgerville that way, if there's three cars ahead of you, you're gonna be waiting an hour but if you go to the counter you'll probably get your grub in 10-15 minutes even if it's busy.

I'll take LJS chicken planks instead of the meh fish any day of the week. Probably a good thing my local one closed and the next closest is four hours away.

I admit to going to LJS on occasion. My wife likes it, and I found out the have fried okra as a side option.

That being said, I went inside the one here a couple of weeks ago for some reason. I usually go through the drive thru.
While waiting for my order the girl in the kitchen hollers through the pass through window "Fish up!" for a drive through order. The front girl asks, "You mean chicken?" The cook says, "Whatever."

So I had to ask when I got my order if I got the fish I requested or "whatever."

Hilarity ensued.

We have a local-ish chain that does "Authentic London Style" but owned and staffed entirely by Asians and the batter is more of a tempura.  The chips are standard-issue Sysco fries and cooked okay, but the fish is addicting.  I'm gonna have to think about it for a dinner sometime soon.  There's also a LJS on my work commute, but I never see cars there, and I always look over to see if they've closed yet.
