Around here the latest fad is peanut butter bourbon.

Both are horrendous.

It's the perfect college girl whiskey, subby. Something has gotta compete with Fireball and Southern Comfort.

People who like to dunk on brands like Jim Beam and Jose Cuervo have no understanding of history.

/Both have been around since the 1700's.
//Most of the snooty premium whiskies would not exist without the dedicated efforts of the Beam and Cuervo families to create and maintain whiskey and tequila markets

Sorry, it's not the brand, it's the taste.

In general, I don't like bourbons. I grew up with it, got violently ill at 11 on it, and have not touched it since (55+ years).

I won't bore anyone with the story, but it was certainly a lesson learned.

It's not that I don't like Jose Cuervo, it's just that I like other tequilas more. Don't quiz me about the brands, since it's been 10 years since I had a nice, sipping, smoky tequila.

Glenturret, Bowmore, Oban, and Jameson have too. Nice long whisky heritages.

Cookie dough-flavored whiskey?! GRAPE SCOTCH!

/ Not obscure

2022-06-05 2:35:18 AM
If it has such a good flavor on its own subby, how come more people drink alcohol mixed in some from than they do straight?

Oh....oh right. Its not that it has a good flavor, its that its an "acquired taste", which is a nice way of saying it tastes like crap but you are used to it and like it after a long enough time

Whiskey tastes like an Irish bum filtered grain alcohol through his ass crack after he wiped diarrhea with some mossy sod into a putrid cigarette ashtray at a skank bar.

Now bourbon is fine. But Rye is divine.

Eh, my first experience with scotch was Lagavulin. A lady friend found out I'd never tried scotch and bought me a glass at the pub under the first aid school we worked at.

I was immediately hooked. There was no "getting used to".

Okay, not everyone LIKES having their mouth sexually assaulted by a flaming peat bog, but let's just say I laid back and enjoyed it :P

/gods she was awesome

I like the 99 proof peanut butter whiskey, the lower proof ones are too cloyingly sweet.  i'll get a couple the little nip bottles for the evening, because a larger quantity of any booze would create problems in my house.

All whiskey is spirit made from fermented grain and then aged in barrels, in order to be classified as bourbon, a whiskey needs to be distilled from a mixture of grains, or mash, that's at least 51 percent corn. Rye, funny enough, requires 51 percent rye for it to be a rye whiskey.

But the overall process? Its all the same. Get off your high horse

Not much of a whiskey drinker, but I did get a chance to try Highland Park 25 year old whisky and thought it was one of the best spirits I ever had.

All these flavored bourbons or whiskeys are an abomination. Kind of like the over oaked, "buttery" chardonay they make for the ladies sitting at the bar who order white wine.

My current interest is rye whiskey, for now it is:

Skewball+8Ball(the chocolate whiskey)+vanilla ice cream = delicious summer treat.  Tastes like a peanut butter cup had babies with a milkshake.

Is it a refined drinking experience?  No, but neither is a Mai tai.

I'll stick with 40 Creek.  Nice Canadian whiskey.  Not too expensive, smooth as anything.

As for the various flavours... /hork.  If you want that, go with yer friggen liqueurs and flavoured vodka.  Leave real liquor alone.

2022-06-05 11:45:11 AM
Why are there flavored alcohols?  Simple.  To about 75% of the population, taste of alcohol is bitter(link).  To 25% of the population, it's extremely bitter.

Since not that many people enjoy solely bitter things, you have two options: flavored alcohols or mixed drinks.

Alcohol snobs probably are amongst the 25% who don't taste the bitterness, and miss that point.  Then rant at others who can't enjoy it like they do.

It is always bourbon that people feel the need to mask the flavor of, never Scotch.  Heck, Scotch isn't even really used for cocktails.  The "controversial" thing to add to Scotch is water.  I suppose blended Scotch is sort of like a cocktail where Scotch is mixed with more Scotch.
