I used to go to a combination laundromat and bar, the Saga on Southport.  There was a lit sign in the bar with the machine numbers on it.  When your clothes are done, the light goes out.

Made doing laundry a little less sucky.

The smart owners advertise the ice cream as, "The best LACTOSE FREE ice cream. Tastes just like the real thing!"

And then they use the real thing. Lactose intolerant people put their laundry in, get ice cream, shiat themselves, put their laundry in. More profit.

Florida locations would work the same, except after the second, "put the laundry in" it goes back to "get ice cream" and the cycle repeats infinitely.

I have no idea what many of these comments mean and I'm not going to rtfa.

There was a place in Seattle called the Sit & Spin where you could drink beer, do your  laundry, and sometimes see a band play.

I stopped going there when the band stole my Grannies undies and made like the RHCP's.

Not cool, man, not cool.

My "next" fortune will be made from coin laundries. The thing is, they are black holes for electricity. You have to get over the electricity and hot water costs and then make sure you have enough customers in an area that it can be supported. The rest is just vending machines basically.

Using different renewable energy technologies, you could set up a really sweet place with washers, dryers, coke and ice cream machines, maybe a game center. I suppose the sweet spot in Japan is to set up next to a Pachinko parlor or a Sento.

With the likely high set up and fixed costs, I guess I was wrong to say that it would be my next fortune. It would have to be my next, next fortune. Like the 20 million I would make after winning 2 million in a lottery.

The Cove in San Antonio started as a laundromat. They added a self serve car wash and a snack bar to pass the time while doing your laundry.

Now, the snack bar has grown into a massive organic restaurant/bar with a huge beer garden, live music, playground for kids, and a dog park.

There was one in the 90's in Atlanta that I forget the name of (Suds -n-Duds? I think it was on Buford Hwy.). It was pretty big with a bar, pool tables, food etc.

This is not a new concept, although the Japanese one sounds much more lame.

Back in my laundromat days they were either slightly better or worse than hanging out in a Greyhound station.
