rickythepenguin: I've already reconciled myself to the fact Eli is going to the HOF, but, Joe Namath has no business being in.  He made the HOF off of one brash prediction.

he's -47 in TD/INT.  why the hell is he in the Hall?  (173 to 220).

...because it's been 50 years and he's still a household name? It's the Hall of Fame, not the Hall of Most Statistically Impressive Athletes. His best years were around the time of the AFL/NFL merger and he was ubiquitous in the media, right? Won one of the first Super Bowls? I know all this and the guy retired 10 years before I was born. He's an icon.

I believe the rationale of HoF voters is "can you tell the story of the game without this person?"

Mark Sanchez gets passed over, maybe they're holding out for a butt fumble statue outside the stadium.

Eddie Hazel's E string: This was a solid counterpoint, but I do not think they should be enshrined as members, despite their off-the-field contributions. I'm all for seeing their memorabilia in Canton in various exhibits.

100% agreed.  MLB will, when a kid who will be out of baseball in 2 years, throws a no hitter, they'll get his glove or spikes, jersey, wahtever, on exhibit.  NFL could do the same.

Eddie Hazel's E string: And now I'm chuckling. Even a slippery slope of allowing marginal candidates to be elected... no. Just no.

oh yeah.  and i'm not frothing at the mouth, slamming my laptop keys, this is a good natured but "real" discussion;  Joe doesn't belong, and if the criteria, oft-cited, is, "can you tell the story of the ___ without him?" is the bar, then let everyone in.

i mean, completely imperfect comparison, given what the media was in 1971 or what the fark versus now, but, Baker Mayfield never made a guarantee, but all things being equal, he's as arguably in the public psyche as Joe was.  Dude will be on a different NFL team in August.  Namath played 12-13 years, Mayfield going into his 4th or 5th, but he was never the turnover machine Namath was.  and from memory, he finished with a completion percentage (Joe, that is) hovering around 50%.  and, people will sometimes say, "well yeah man, but his last few years in LA, the team sucked, that's not all his fault."

uh.....he played one season in LA.  it's not like he languished for 6 years on a bad team.  he was the bad team.  christ look at his NYJ only career stats:  60-61-4.  he had more losses/ties than wins.  and in the LA year, he only started 4 games, and went 2-2 at that.

no business being in the HOF.

/"ricky, did Joe Namath fark your mom or something?  why all the hate?"

themunsterfullback: Elway also had some less than stellar receivers over his career. Never had a pro bowler until Rod Smith in his last year I believe.

Not saying this about Elway, but that's a two-way street.  Put me at QB in the NFL for ten years, and I will never have a pro-bowl receiver during my career, either.
