Avatar 2: the aliens who built the garden come back to see what humans did with their stuff.

Michale Bay version just involved striking the planet with a near light speed impactor to break it up so they could harvest what they wanted without local resistance.

Little early to be forecasting the Oscars. There's still 7 months of movies to go.

Top Gun 2 will probably get nominations for Sound Design, Editing, and maybe Cinematography.

It also underscores why the Academy is long overdue creating an Oscar category for Stunt Coordinator.

It's anyone actually excited to see a new Avatar movie? The first one still makes me mad that I paid actual money to see it in a theater.

I didn't like the original and have no plans on spending any money to see part 2.

I gotta say, I haven't heard a bad word about the movie yet from anyone I know that's seen it.  Quite the opposite.

I'm only mad that my wife took me and the kids to see it..... in 3D.  I had to remind her as we entered the theater that i'm color blind....  The other's enjoyed it very much.

Wasn't a great movie or plot but i've seen much much worse.

I never saw the first Avatar and haven't missed out on a single cultural reference.  I hate to bet against Cameron, but I don't see how this is successful.

About as many as were excited to see a Top Gun sequel in 2016.

Avatar sucked. I mean, it really sucked.

2022-06-01 5:19:49 PM
I skipped Avatar when it was originally released because I thought it looked kinda lame and stupid. Even though it got glowing reviews, I assumed it would probably not be terrible, but it would be James Cameron's worst movie, if that makes sense.

Then a few months back I read some articles about what they're working on with the Avatar franchise. They've been working on them for like a decade- making FOUR movies. Disney created an Avatar land in anticipation of their release. They're hyping it as the biggest entertainment project in history. And considering Cameron's legendary talent for making excellent sequels, I decided to jump on board and finally watch Avatar.

It was kinda lame and stupid. While not terrible, it was James Cameron's worst movie.

Avatar was a lame story but still better than Dances With Wolves or Pocahontas; it was what it was, and looked like nothing else before or since. I'll see the second one.

I can see Top Gun earning its justified share of technical award nominations - but I have a hard time believing we'll see anything regarding its script, story, or actors. Love it all you want, it ain't high art. Neither are plenty of Oscar winners, of course - and I'll eat my words if I'm wrong - but I'll be shocked if I have to do so.

It's weird, but the world of this movie struck me as so abstract that it doesn't HAVE to be the USA. Of course there's nowhere else that it COULD take place, but that says more about the kind of culture that sustains the kind of ego that Cruise and his character share. It's more 'Merica than America.

Because they (plus FernGully), are the same movie as Avatar, just filmed differently. It's just an ordinary film/book trope. Sully on Dr. Quinn comes to mind as well.

Oh, it's not going to win Best anything. Maybe a special effects award because most of them are practical, so the old guard can hand out a reward as a fark you to the CGI people, but otherwise no. It was ridiculous from beginning to end. There was actually a moment when I thought it might take a serious turn, but that was just a small pause before it ramped itself up into a series of events so absurd I couldn't help but smile. How else COULD a sequel to Top Gun end?

The effects are why the response to the movie has been so positive. It was a lot more fun to watch than the typical "sky beam and 30 minutes of aerial whip pans and random destruction" that looks like the CGI just splooged on the screen. You used CGI to topple a building? Wow, nobody's ever done that except for the dozens of times they have since Independence Day came out.

Hate on Cruise and Cameron all you want, but at least they get that CGI is a tool, not the entire toolbox.

The Movie Academy has been biased toward "independent" films winning Best Picture the past 25 years, for the most part.

stoli n coke: Wow, nobody's ever done that except for the dozens of times they have since Independence Day came out.

Damned if I can find the DVD extra movie about the Independence Day special effects, but those were all miniatures, not CGI. Even the skyscraper blowing up in New York was a miniature. The CGI was just the alien beam. White House? Miniature they really blew up. The flames running down Sixth Avenue? A model of Sixth Avenue they stood up on end and pumped flames from the bottom up.

That may have been the LAST movie to use mostly practical special effects. Titanic came out the following year and James Cameron got everyone on the CGI bandwagon.

Tom Cruise was so obsessed with realism for Top Gun: Maverick that he had himself actually turned into a Lockheed/Martin SR-72 Darkstar for the fly-over scene.

Well....if he wanted realism, then Maverick should have shown his military ID instead of hauling ass past that guard station.

Honestly, it was way less gay than the first one. I didn't even know what gay was when I saw the first one in '86 but I knew it was gay. I'm well schooled on gay now, and this movie is like 80% less gay. It's more a father/son vibe.*

*there might be gay porn for that
