There's an entire. farking. railroad. track.

A track without a train on it.

Right. Farking. There.

No barrier between you - and the track you are on, with the speeding train on it - and the other track, that you are not on, without a speeding train on it.

Sure, walking across a bridge on an active track is pretty dumb to begin with. Yeah, I get that. Even Darwin can occasionally cut someone some slack.

Trains - just hear me out here - travel on tracks. And sure, we all know the meme, but unless the train is literally multi-track drifting (in which case your problems are the least of the train's worries!), why in Darwin's name would you try to outrun a train instead of simply walking a few feet perpendicular to the train's path of motion, where it can't eat you. (After briefly glancing in both directions along on the second track in case there's a second train hunting you down in concert with the first one, of course.)

I used to work in a building that was several feet from tracks. We'd get freight and passenger trains all day. Freight moved slow through town and made plenty of noise. Passenger trains came through fast and quiet.

One day when I was outside on a break, two young women were taking pictures of each other on the tracks. I don't particularly care that they are trespassing, but I don't want to see anyone hurt. So I tell them to be careful, Amtrak comes through fast and quiet.

The "model" starts freaking out about how they aren't hurting anything. They're just taking pictures!

The photographer asked, "Did you actually hear what she said?"

I was about 6 when Stand By Me came out, and about 12 when I saw it for the first time. I was in a situation remarkably similar to the Gordy Lachance character and the film helped me out to feel a lot less alone, several times through my teenage years. Once I was very close to killing myself. I was headed to the car to drive it over the side or a bridge. And right before I walked out of the house rhe movie was playing and something made me sit down, and the Lard Ass scene came on almost immediately and I laughed so hard I couldn't breathe, maybe out of relief at something safe and familiar, maybe because a big fat son of a biatch was projectile spewing used pie all over the faces and clothing of his enemies.

Whatever it was, I've been convinced in the years since that that movie, and Lachance specifically, saved my life that day.

I don't know how often he still hangs out here but hey Wil, if you see this... thanks.

Because you're a kid and outrunning the train is more fun than just standing there watching it go past. coontil, y'know, it isn't.) Safety kid plays it safe. Blue shirt knows he's ok to his right the whole time and peels off as the train closes, having successfully raced the train to the end of the bridge. White shirt intended to veer off to the left at the end of the bridge, looked back mid-move and realized he misjudged speed/distance but was already committed. Very lucky not to stumble at that moment. In my expert opinion as a former child, that six seconds of silent footage says a surprising amount about these three kids.

I remember an occasion in college when I was out hiking with some friends and we ended up walking through a half mile long train tunnel where our only option should a train have come along would have been to throw ourselves down  on the ground against the wall to avoid being hit.

Luckily, no train came but one of my friends ended up sliding down a steep hill when he accidentally stepped into the remains of a deer some asshole had shot and left behind.

Good thing he was too drunk to be seriously hurt.

Maybe it's a built in response to large threats. The chimp that didn't run from the wildebeest didn't have offspring. Millions of years later, same threat response to trains, even though they won't chase your lateral.

If you've ever seen any gun camera film from a fighter strafing troops on a beach, you know humans just run away, they don't think. The easiest way to not get shot by an airplane is to move in a lateral plane. Running away in a straight line is essentially creating your oven virtual railroad track.

I used to rent in a trailer park right on the tracks. On the other side of these tracks was the station and downtown (some Farkers know where this is by this description alone).  I crossed active tracks 20 times a day, sober, tipsy and shiatfaced drunk. It's really not that difficult. Trains are big and loud.  The alternative was walking down a section of frontage road so you could cross under.

Turns out action movies are correct. People would just run in a straight line away from a car rather than down an alley
