Anyone with a domestic violence incident should be banned from owning a gun but we can't have that because then 40% of cops would be stuck as unarmed meter maids.

We need to build teams to investigate when kids are in crisis and then link those kids to mental health services. The problem is that in a lot of places, those services are not there. There's no community mental health and no school-based mental health. Schools are the ideal setting because it doesn't require a parent to take you there. A lot of perpetrators are from families where the parents are not particularly proactive about mental health appointments.

The important thing - the MOST important thing - is that every American at all times has their hands on a lightweight pistol-gripped short-barreled semi-automatic rifle fed by high-capacity quick-change magazines.

Because half the republican base is one missed paycheck away from snapping and going on a rampage, and if politicians take pre-emptive action against those people they know they'll become the target of that pent-up rage.

Too often in politics it becomes an either-or proposition. Gun control or mental health. Our research says that none of these solutions is perfect on its own. We have to do multiple things at one time and put them together as a comprehensive package. People have to be comfortable with complexity and that's not always easy.

I've been saying this for days. Everyone acts like this is a single issue problem. Dems think getting rid of guns will make people stop murdering. Or, they think that passing laws will fix it all, ignoring the fact that murder is already illegal. Repubs are taking about mental health. None of these single items is the answer, just like with the renewable energy debate. There are many aspects of this. Mental health is 100% a part of the discussion. So is bullying. This latest shooter was bullied, including him schoolmates teasing ukm and saying he was probably going to be a school shooter some day. Guns are part of the equation, but they aren't the actual cause of the issue, so getting rid of them won't stop people from killing innocents.

This is never going away until everyone involved acts like adults, and the first step there is admitting that your version of the solution is only part of what needs to happen.

What I read there was if republicans are blaming it on mental health then why aren't republicans getting behind solutions targeting mental health.

It really isn't just mental health, but you know what? Let's go with that and go all in on building social programs to support those in need to avoid this tragedy. I'm sure republicans will line up behind that this time.

Google, Amazon, and every other large company in America engages in massive data mining. If you consider merely "putting people on lists" to be totalitarian, then America is the most totalitarian country in the history of the world. Why do you hate America?

Denying modern big data tools to government out of misguided libertarian ideological paranoia just means you get ineffective government. It's insane and stupid to say that it's "totalitarian" when the government does the exact same things that every private company of any size on the planet is doing.

2022-05-29 12:14:53 AM
Here's the really stupid thing about that movie (and the books it was based on): if they just did pre-crime diversions where they intervened to prevent the murders and helped the perpetrators deal with whatever issues drove them to try to commit the crimes in the first place, and that intervention and help was non-violent and non-punitive and focused on a therapeutic approach to aid and rehabilitation, I can't think of a single thing that would have been bad about the program.

I live in totalitarian Australia where we can't get AR-15's under any circumstances.
