Don't hang an Olympic gold medal from the rear view mirror. That's just for air fresheners and rosaries.

If you have two medals you can hang them from the back like truck nuts.  Perhaps connecting them to a battery will work for theft deterrence.

Why would she carry the passport everywhere she goes in the car too? In case she needs to leave the country in a minute notice??

The Olympian is a idiot but who was the news editor who decided to insert the Uvalde shooting for SEO?

I left my garage open once in Seattle.  It was raining and I just felt lazy (garage was not powered).  Someone went in there and used a saw to cut through the wooden  beam that my bike was chained to.  Bike gone.  Lesson learned. That was 20 years ago.  In 2022? Anaheim? That passport and medal would either never leave my sight or just stay home.  Carry around a replica, I dunno.  Sucks for her obviously, and not her fault beyond making a mistake and paying for it.

It's easy for you to criticize! Where do you store your Olympic gold metal (if not in your car?)

They go for about $20 on eBay.

She takes it everywhere to show family and friends. To be completely fair, I would to. Who would believe you could win an Olympic medal for volleyball?

At least she didn't do something totally crazy like throw it in a river

And look at the way she's dressed. I blame the victim. She was asking for it.

Nice way to twist the intent of my question.
I was honestly asking why someone would carry the passport everywhere. What benefit or advantage provides doing it. I wasn't putting blame on her. Notice how I didn't say anything about the gold medal being left in the car?? No, obviously you didn't. You just rushed to defend what wasn't being attacked.

If only there were some sort of communication functionality that could provide statistical information at the end of one's fingertips...

I'd go as far to say she was keeping it around to basically 'show off'. I don't care, and that's definitely not a reason anyone should steal it from her.

But it is risky behavior. I mean look at how she wears it... she had it coming.

/halfway through the post I realized it may look like victim blaming even though that wasn't my initial intention.

TFA pretty much said it was to show it off.

If I had an Olympic medal I'd show it off too. Unfortunately my sports are tic-tac-toe and rubber band fights.

She seemed to handle it pretty well too. She was upset, but just like, well, my fault for not closing the garage.

(Which it's not, exactly, but kinda)

But but but it was in my OPEN garage, unlocked.

Jesus, you guys all think that an open door is literally, not figurateively, an invitation for theft. Figuratively an invitation, it would raise the chance of a theft a little bit, even though property rights are real. But this entire thread thinks that it is obvious and inevitable someone would steal from an open garage because the garage owner has forfeited all their property rights.

The USA is seriously farked in the head. Like, farked in the head levels of farked in the head. Jesus shiat on Mother Mary's pap smear, this thread is farked like a veterinary speculum in a grandma's mouth. Like, stay the fark away from me you wart tongued motherfarker why are you licking everyone at the party farked in the head.

When she visits the desert, she doesn't bring water or a fan, she brings a car door.

She brags about finishing a children's jigsaw puzzle in less than five years.

Damn it people stop leaving valuable in an unattended car. even more so if your not gonna lock them in the trunk.   I have heard and read so many stories of these wholly preventable thefts it makes me was to head desk.

No mention of the six handguns that were stolen as well
