Officials estimate the street value of the parts to be nearly $200,000.

If only the cost of replacement to the victims was a mere $166...

What gets me is how they fence these. Someone showing up with a crapload of catalytic converters who isn't a large fleet mechanic should raise lots of red flags. The scrap metal dealers are the ones we should be going after.

This. The money and time cost to people could be 10 times that. I wouldn't care if they strung him up.

A Phoenix Catalyst sounds like the material component for an RPG resurrection spell.

Probably fence them through some shady exhaust shops. Sell to exhaust shop for cash and the exhaust shop then takes them to a scrap yard and it can kinda, sorta *LOOK* legit when some guy from Otto's Muffler shows up to cash them in for scrap. Does anyone check that exhaust shops are selling/replacing approximately the same number of converters that they are scrapping?

I had mine taken last week. Guy who replaced it said having an aftermarket CC was better security than a steel cage. I hope so.

Getting catalytic converters stolen has been a big story in Vegas for the past few months. Every other day local news talks about it and then shows some shop that will help protect your converter from theft. Of course, they charge a couple hundred for work so I'm beginning to think it's all one big scam by mechanics, metal workers, and everyday thieves.

Well. It might be time to mention
That I had an idea in a session
That I'd write a country song
One that wouldn't last too long
About helping a woman whose car was stranded
It just stopped on the road to Branded
And me and my friend got it running
It took a while but we wasn't funning
We didn't really want to hurt her
But we stole her Cadillac converter

Put my full skid plate package on the 4Runner last weekend, complete with cat shield to deter thieves. Apparently they love Toyota cats, and the 4R having a high ground clearance just makes it all that much more enticing. Not foolproof, but hopefully they'll move on to easier pickin's when they see the extra work required.

I suspect that stuff like this takes a slow boat to China in a cargo container to be refurbished or melted down for the catalysts.

There might be something to that. One of our customers had 2 of their trucks hit. One of them had 1 OEM cat and 1 aftermarket one. They only took the OEM one. Really sucks the other truck they cut both out of is brand new and hadn't even been put into service yet.

It's a bad sign for our society that we can't just kill these people. Not sorry. Thieves have reached a point where there's no fear whatsoever of consequences. It's everyone else who gets to live with the dread that they'll inevitably get their shiat stolen, they they'll now be without the car that enabled them to work, and the legal system will tell them "welp, sucks to be you, better luck in the future, and don't even think of trying to defend your property with force."

They should make an example of him.

They used to hang horse thieves. Being as it's Arizona, I think they should make the effort to honor their heritage.

Horse thieves used to be hanged. It's time we bring that back for people who fark with other people's cars.

I occasionally recycle scrap copper for my work.  One time I went down to my usual metal yard to trade it in, but not today!   Big chain and padlock on the fence with a notice from the U.S. Marshall's office saying that the scrap yard was closed indefinitely.

I chuckled.
