"When the cops came, the cop said: 'Yell if you need help!' And one of the persons in my class said 'help.' The guy overheard and he came in and shot her," the boy said.

Yes, let's encourage potential targets to reveal their location when there's still an active threat. Brilliant idea, asshole.

"The cop barged into that classroom. The guy shot at the cop. And the cops started shooting."

And we're back to some of the victims potentially being hit by police fire. Awesome.

Christ, I don't know if I would want "Police may have hit some kids but they acted as soon as possible to prevent more deaths" or "Police waited so they wouldn't hit innocents and the delay cost lives", but the police here somehow managed to pick the worst of both worlds apparently.

/I'd actually prefer "Police rush in to confront shooter immediately and DON'T hit innocents"
//But that's apparently not something police can do
///For some reason

obviously, the answer is to give guns to teachers who have had no training or experience, because, can they really do any worse?

Nothing is going to change because Americans are ok with all of this. Really. They've had decades to do something about it. If they weren't ok with it they'd change it.

Run if you can
Hide if you have to
Fight if you can't run or hide
Follow instructions from first responders
That last one.  I'm seeing a problem

Our last active shooter training, you lock the door and barricade.  Don't open the door unless instructed by the security police.  Gee, if I'm a shooter and the cops are hanging around outside and I got time to cap a few more.  Guess what I'm gonna yell on the other side of the doors.

It only seems that way because we have been trained to believe abject bullshiat about law enforcement in this country.

This is actually completely on-brand and consistent with my expectations for cops.

No these will be used as a reason to increase police funding.

And probably within a few months we'll hear about police departments staging active shooter drills with students

No, Americans are NOT ok with this. Even the trumpers want the violence to stop.
But ideology is more important than lives, and Republicans just ... can't do it. Even when they KNOW reform is necessary, that reform is popular...they can't do it. They just can't let the Dems "win".
That's why this country is collapsing. Because even when we all actually agree on something, nothing gets done. A healthy society would fix this problem. A broken society just ignores the deaths.

Yeah, this will probably open up a huge can of worms about the department and how it spends its resources, how it trains their officers, and how much waste and graft are funneled through the department.

and it probably happens in every county, city, township etc.....

Make sure there's an independent coroner to examine these kids for stray cop bullets. Because the cops and their minions are absolutely going to lie about it.

2022-05-27 10:47:16 AM
Asking kids to yell out before even knowing the status of the shooter is just incompetence.  I hope the parents of that kid sue the shait out of whatever law enforcement agency who's officer that was.  And that cop should be prosecuted for that child's death if possible, but at least fired and not allowed to work in law enforcement ever again.

Unfortunately, SCOTUS has determined that cops can commit all of the atrocities they want and they still cannot be held liable because of "Qualified Immunity".  That last part is addressed in the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act passed by the house and murdered in the Senate by 50 GOP senators and 2 "Democratic" senators.  If Dems can get another handful of senators in November and keep the house, then they might be able to make real changes.

2022-05-27 10:48:02 AM
All cops are bastards. Cowardly, useless, fascist bastards. If they are not obligated to protect people, they have no legitimate reason to exist.

Police departments are no better than any street gang or cartel. They're just given legal authority to lie, cheat, steal and kill.

Every story that comes out adds another digit to an already growing class action lawsuit against the police department. By the time the stories are done, the police will be wholly owned by the family of the deceased and injured.

Let's not underestimate ourselves.  If enough Americans cared enough to mobilize there would be severe gun restriction laws passed tomorrow, because our representatives would be made to understand that if they didn't do something they would be lucky to be alive the next day.

That won't happen unless they fear us.  But oh, can they be made to fear us.

Folks in a town near me held a prayer vigil last night to offer "thoughts and prayers" in support of the people of Uvalde.  Now they can go into their long memorial day holiday weekend with a clear conscience from the belief that they have actually done something useful to fix the situation.

In order to "vote them out", the Dems will need to completely dominate the next 4 election cycles. That will give them sufficient political power to start undoing all the bad laws inflicted on us by arrogant and stupid conservatives.
That's just to get things moving mind you. In order to actually make the changes stick - the Dems will need to retain their advantage for another 4 election cycles, or the GOP will simply erase anything the Dems fix.
So there you go. It'll take at least 8 to 10 years of constant political battles against a psychotic Republican party that simply refuses to admit that they're wrong.

These cops were outside a school during a massacre, armed and armored, and they couldn't lure the murderer to a window where a sniper could get a clean shot at him?

Nope, they were too busy shiatting themselves and defending themselves against unarmed parents.

The cops were just happy to have one less kid to save.

F*cking cowards.

Had cops literally watch a guy get jumped on the street, nearly in front of the police station, and then took fifteen minutes to send an officer over AFTER myself and another bystander jumped in to help the poor bastard. And the dispatcher, who had been outside smoking and watching, had the audacity to ask me when I called 911 was I sure about the address. And I had to call her on it, because I knew the woman. Mind you, these are small city Western Mass cops, so really, drunk and disorderlies are more their speed, but this is also the same force that let a woman get shot across the street from the police station by her husband--who she called them that he was following her--after she got a restraining order against him.

Mind you, I got stabbed so that folks could drink and have a good time, so maybe my priorities are a little off too.   But remind me why the cops need MOAR money to not protect their communities?

2022-05-27 11:06:06 AM
Both the delay, and telling the kids to speak up, lead me to believe the cops were encouraging those kids to die.

Jimmy Kimmel's monologue said it well. They need to admit that they are wrong, but they just can't. There is something in the conservative mind that will not, under any circumstances, admit fault or wrongness.
