What's been built so far can only charitably be called cargo cult-like objects. They look a bit like lightsabers and that's it.

Verdict: For now, we'll have to make do with swinging a broom around our heads and making our own lightsaber sound effects.

Might be. But it does seem to show that plasma is probably the better way to go for now. At least until technology progresses to a point where you can sustain a beam of some sort via a radically miniaturized power source putting out gigawatts of energy per second.
