Yeah, also if they'd quit it with the seizure of the Ukranian ports and basic blockade of the Black sea... that'd be gr8, k thx, bai!

Yeah...so?

Carter gave a big "FU" to OPEC in the 70's. It did raise gas prices, in the short term,...but ultimately it made USA USA less dependent on Muslim oil. While we still get a great deal of oil from those Theocracies, we're far less dependent on them and far less influenced by them to shape foreign policies.

Putin needs his ass kicked back into Russia or he or his successor will be back to do it all over again.  Russia needs to be utterly demolished and sent packing.  All the consequences are squarely on Moscow.

Most of the western world is too fat anyway.

I mean, most of this will hit poorer countries hardest of course.

Well. This is all sad. The Russians are going to be dicks, so what can the world do?

If food were free, would we have less of it, or more. Less, right? Many countries have subsidized food production for all kinds of reasons, creating oversupply, but we are bumping up, as usual, on having barely enough to get by, on a whole Earth scale. I guess what will happen is that world prices for food will rise, and money will have to be doled out to poorer countries so they can buy food.

Is that so bad?  I wonder. Higher food prices are going to turn poorer countries away from emisserating production of cash export crops and toward food production. Generally overweight people in food-rich countries should pay higher prices for food to discourage overconsumption. Local production. Local consumption. Consume less meat.

I don't know. As someone said upthread, higher prices might force many countries to make changes that they should make anyway. That is true for fuel, food, probably a lot of things.

No need to thank Russia for doing us the favor, to be sure. And you know, the West will get all those subsidies back in reparations, so SAVE YOUR RECEIPTS.

Energy policy is foreign policy because the idea is why extract US resources when the technology (patents and licensing) expands markets at home AND abroad? It's not inherently evil, but it can be exploitative, like anything.

The Arab and Persian kingdoms were exploited by the CIA for two generations, and Carter? He might have stopped the degree of exploitation-- that's why he was not granted a second administration. Conservatives committed treason to effect his "loss".

Trade is the ONLY solution to conflict, other an option is to advance a hegemony...until it pops.

Unfortunately it takes many months to grow food, and you'll need to plan entire seasons ahead -- Not exactly the kind of supply chain that can turn on a dime, and countless millions of the most vulnerable people may very well die while the world "readjusts" to a new reality.

/You may also have to give up chocolate, coffee, and other luxuries that only grow in few areas.

They're wrecking the Russian economy.

No money to pay soldiers - very pissed off soldiers

No grift for the oligarchs -  very pissed off people with money to pay soldiers.

No food - very pissed off people willing to overthrow their government, with the support of the soldiers and the people with money

Whoa there.  Where is all this money for food from other countries coming from?  Russia?  If so that is fine.  They started the war.

From the US?  If so, why?  And if we are gonna pay for food from the war russia has with ukraine, we should be demanding russia surrender without conditions and that all oil and gas from russia be sized.  Forever.  And that all testicles in russia from men, women, mxn, and womxn, be confiscated and crushed so there can be no more russian people in the future.

fark the orcs.  Make them pay for all the problems.

Nuclear annihilation of moscow.  Give ukraine the nukes they gave up.  If we dont have the exact model and makenof nukes, give them the best replacement we have.  Then eliminate the problem.

The war is happening because ukrainenwas tricked into giving up nukes.  They were told we and the world would protect them with our nukes.

Toxic hatred is the point. Just after the communists disappeared we got the Serbians to hate. When they were dealt with we got Muslims. Just as soon as we pull out of a 20-year war in Afghanistan, up pop a demand to hate Russians. Gotta have a foreign boogeyman to distract you.

How exactly would the military, the oligarchs, or the people benefit from launching nukes?

The only real danger of nukes comes from Putin.

I mean, there's going to be a huge power vacuum sans Putin that's going to make things worse in the short term, but no one would benefit from launching nukes. It wouldn't help anyone vying for power.

It's nothing to do with overpopulation of countries dependent on manual labor in planting and harvesting staple crops by small holders who can't organize into cooperative's because their governments have fixed prices below production. Or organic zealots who banned agrichemical imports. Or polluted rice paddies that now have too much arsenic from smelter fallout and rice grown there isn't fit to be burned. It's all because one region is out of production, where they've been made highly productive by adopting mechanization and modernized systems.
