There were avant garde composers doing just that decades before Black Sabbath.

Fun fact:

The reason for Black Sabbath's heavy sound was largely due to an accident Tony Iommi suffered while still working a day job at a sheet metal factory.  The tips of the fingers on his fret hand were cut off, and while he was determined to still play guitar he had to wear protective caps over his fingers to do so.  And he started tuning his guitar down so the looser strings would be easier to play with the caps on his fingertips.

When I was a little kid I thought heavy metal bands played steel guitars. It was mostly because I hadn't actually heard any heavy metal music and my shiatty little Casio keyboard had a setting called steel guitar.

Heavy metal isn't always really heavy music. Who else thinks so?

I thought the term "heavy metal" came from Steppenwolf's Born to be Wild and was borrowed by Lester Bangs to describe the genre in Rolling Stone in the early 70's?

same here.

You'd turn it off when I was halfway across: [danecobain.com image 401x640]

Didn't he use the term in The Soft Machine before that?   Also, I always considered Uriah Heep to be a metal band before Sabbath.   They are real close in the timeline.

Oh good. This is covered.

After it took me a hot second to remember how the band's name is spelled.

But literally Google "band with lots of machinery noises" and they come up in some of the first hits.

The story I heard that because Birmingham was a steel town,. they lived with the sound of the steel presses banging away in the background all day long, and they put that sound into their music: "heavy metal".

And damn difficult to use as a rolling tray, unlike a CD or a record.

Bingo.

Birminghamshire is the birthplace of heavy metal:

Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Deep Purple.

/Hence the mumblety-peg speech. "Alaska hahaha noise zzz" = "Honey, get the hose, for my balls are on fire!"

I love that they refused to translate their über-German name -- which is actually not that easy for a native German to say, really -- for other markets.  Even their name sounds like some kind of malfunctioning drill press.

Honestly, I could never get into them. But respect that they're good at...whatever is it...that they do.
