He died of a broken heart.  Another death solely placed at the feet (were they working in the first place) of Governor Abbott.

Heartbreak is real. You can really die of it. I think I've come pretty close. My grandma died of heartbreak after my grandfather died. Supposedly you can actually take Tylenol to help the pain of a broken heart, although I guess if it turns into an actual heart attack aspirin might be better.

Oh my god...their children. I cannot imagine...

Rwa2play has it right - this is squarely at the feet of Greg Abbott, Dan Patrick, Republicans, and the NRA. I hope their children sue these bastards into freaking oblivion.

Here is the family's GoFundMe: https://www.gofundme.com/f/ygcdaa-for-garcia-family

tudorgurl: I hope their children sue these bastards into freaking oblivion.

Both of their parents are dead, in part due to a tragedy those kids might feel those bastards are responsible for.  Suing is one possibility.  Their two oldest kids are over 18 and male.  Men, especially at that age, and especially when emotionally distraught, have the potential to act impulsively.

Thankfully, they're in Texas, where it's damn near impossible to get your hands on a firearm on short notice.

To be clear, I'm not advocating anything.  Just stating facts that have the potential (albeit small) to lead to a possible outcome.

Don't worry - none of this is gonna stop Congress from enjoying their 3 day weekend and holiday parties.

Would be totally reprehensible. So reprehensible that I would volunteer to serve on the jury.

Careful, now, they might have to just pass some laws restricting protesters outside of the homes of Supreme Court Justices. After all, those nine (well, no, just the conservative six) people are the real victims in all of this.

But it's too early to talk about gun reform? It's too early to talk about the impact on the families, one of which now must deal with the loss of both parents within days of each other? The ripple effect from tragedy spreads far and wide, but the immediate impact, the one that is the most calamitous, is family. fark each one of these shooters and the fact that Abbott openly called for Texas to surpass California for gun purchases. That shiatweasel sacralized guns even more than the NRA has, urging everyone to run out and buy them on a whim.

Now, here we are. Yet more innocent victims succumbing to the violence wrought through lax guns laws and a governor more interested in shoving his head up Trump's ass than doing anything meaningful.

Let's add a new tragedy on top of the existing tragedy, their poor kids and family, jfc that's horrible!

Gun nuts are responsible for building this perverted culture. Anti-personnel weapons are responsible for these horrible killings.

It's not mental illness, or doors, or whatever bullshiat MAGAt Republicans are pushing to help them sleep better at night on their piles of blood money.

It's gun nuts. And guns.

I predict that someday a few survivors of school massacres will be in positions of political power and authority in the U.S., at which point gun lovers will start feeling payback.

You'd think a few folks in the GOP would realize that the massacres their party tacitly supports bear the seeds of the party's own downfall.

Unfortunately a couple things have been reported.

Law enforcement completely changed their story on what happened during a bizarre press conference. Originally it was said a school cop confronted the suspect, and today they're saying there never was a confrontation between the school cop and suspect.

Also, The Wall Street Journal reporting parents were tackled, pepper sprayed and arrested when arriving at the school.

Maybe it was when he was told to provide a DNA swab because that was the only way they would be able to tell one mutliated body from another.

Wait, what? I hit the smiley when someone says something funny all the time. To show approval. If I missed a memo, I have a lot of apologizing to do.

How about we get a "naff off" button and skip the code-within-a-code crap.

Yea, this is getting a distinct Parkland, FL vibe of police response (or lack there of)

Imagine someone being an integral part of your life for more than half your existence, your entire adulthood, the source of your greatest joys, and then they're just randomly, senselessly, brutally murdered.  It's just so devastatingly sad, it isn't hard to see why the crippling grief could be lethal.

Somewhere on Tuesday's mega-thread on the Uvalde massacre, the 'Funny' became passive-aggressive. It takes away from those of us who shiatpost for actual humor.

I'm also seeing that they deleted a bunch of police scanner audio?  Holy crap, please let this be the catalyst for gun AND police reform.  I have little hope that the Senate can be made to see reason, but I've got my fingers crossed anyway.

Just the opposite. But while there is no legal duty to respond, the analysis of previous school shootings is that the most effective response is to go in immediately.. Waiting neither reduces risk for officers nor gives a better chance of survival to the victims. This has been known and part of police training for years now. And the UPD disregarded it to save only their own kids and prevent other parents from trying to do the same.

When I found out my dad had terminal cancer I was gutted, and I didn't know what to do, think, or anything. I guess I was stuffing my feelings down and not dealing with the news at all. I woke up one morning a couple of days after finding out feeling like an elephant was standing on my chest. 911 was called and the EMTs and ER Dr.s were pretty convinced it was a heart attack but whatever chemical/enzyme they find in your bloodstream if it is a heart attack was not there. I was sent to a Cardiologist and given a full workup, they concluded it was Broken Heart Syndrome {also called Stress-Induced Cardiomyopathy}. It's a real thing and my therapist helped me get through it all.

bubbadave1056: Ummm...I think if you're a SWORN OFFICER, you are duty-bound to act, even if off-duty?  Or am I mistaken?

You are mistaken.  Now morally maybe they will feel required to act, but they will not be punished or criminally charged.  Even on-duty officers don't necessarily have an obligation to act. On-duty may be subject to discipline and civil suits for failing to act, but criminal charges are rare but possible (Scott Peterson from Parkland is facing child abuse charges under the theory he was a negligent caregiver)

So their two eldest children will now become de facto parents to the two youngest. I imagine - Texas being Texas - the state will provide little to support this, and they will be entirely dependent on charity for many years.

I hope a good legal firm will offer them pro bono support.
