There's quite a few instances of that.

Forget about the transphobic jokes! Has he tried being funny? I remember watching the first season of The Office (UK version), and smiling (not laughing) maybe twice.

Comedians aren't the ones trying to re-label trans folks as weak, brittle faberge eggs that can't listen to a joke without eating a bullet.

The social media uberwokenz are. Same people that implied inner city people were too stupid to find a farking CVS to get a Covid-19 vaccine and needed them to set up in food trucks on corners.

At first I was thinking that he had just grossly miscalculated on the joke. He often plays the 'idiot' who has to wrong take on something and then goes off the rails into absurdity with the idea that the crowd laughs 'at' the idiot and not laughs 'with' the idiot.

But his doubling down instead of just saying, "Whoops, that didn't work, sorry." is kind of an asshole move.

FTFA: Following SuperNature's release, LGBTQ+ organization GLAAD took to Twitter to share their frustration: "It's full of graphic, dangerous, anti-trans rants masquerading as jokes," they wrote, arguing that Gervais "also spouts anti-gay rhetoric and spreads inaccurate information about HIV."

I've seen the same sort of descriptions for the most mild of utterances on all sorts of different topics. It used to be that I'd go find out what was being spoken of but after the umpteenth occasion of "That? That is it?" I just stopped.

Ricky Gervais could have said "All trans people deserve bullets in their heads" or "Maybe it is slightly unfair to women athletes to have a trans woman setting all of these collegiate swimming records" and the reaction from organizations like GLAAD and some of those on here would have been the exact same with not one bit of rhetoric being different.

Be honest with yourself, the specific topic doesn't really matter in this case other than it is something that legitimately impacts your life. When you see some boilerplate statement condemning that day's Worst Thing That Has Ever Happened, not once do you roll your eyes a bit upon discovering what actually took place? You don't think that toes are being stubbed, willfully so?

I refuse to accept that so many people out there do not fully understand the lesson of The Boy Who Cried Wolf, that they don't grasp that they make adults numb to their complaints and would be much better served in the long run with measured responses.

Finally saw it.  Extremely lame, very tired and predictable tropes, not at all funny.  It's sad because we know Ricky Gervais can do better.  He usually is better.

I was half expecting different because people cried wolf about Chappelle, but this time I have to agree with the critics.  Ricky wasn't setting up a punchline or being ironic, he was just being a transphobic dick.

But when members of a community have high suicide rates because of constant abuse, maybe tone it down a little.

this is Ricky Gervais in 1982.  he's a pretty pretty lad.
he only got fat ugly and old because he's a manly man made of man parts, you see.
his manliness was too powerful for his own pretty face.

I understand the sentiment. Black people can't karen or else they'll get shot or lynched, so white people sometimes feel they need to karen for them.

I mean, I don't agree. But I understand.

Ricky Gervais evidently hasn't learned any lessons from Chris Rock or Dave Chappelle about behaving himself onstage.

Kind of toeing up to implying violence should be used here.

I saw the special. It sucked. Tired and predictable. I always thought him to be a pompous ass that could dish it out but never take it, but there was usually at least a few chuckles. This was just a transparent cash grab to generate buzz and make a few netflix bux with hacky retreads of old material. He's also got a bad habit of laughing at his own jokes way too often.

I agree with you that the phenomena is annoying, BUT you don't really see famous celebrities in the mass media doing 30 minutes on "the blacks" these days.

That shiat was wrong, just like all the stuff about "the jews" and "the gays". I know all about 'freedom of speech' and 'hurr durr comedy', but society in general should just stop giving people fame and fortune for being bigots. It's just stupid and regressive.

Anyway, John Cleese is on tour currently.

I'm just tired of trans jokes at this point. I support the right of people to identify as any or no gender, as it isn't supposed to make a difference at this point anyway. If I'm treating you in a specific manner based on your gender identification, haven't I already screwed up?

I don't have a good understanding of why folks want to identify as a gender they weren't born into, but I don't have to. On the scale of "Who does it hurt?", the issue barely registers. I'm also weary about people worrying about the impact on athletics. Until you're getting a check for your athletic performance, it's all amateur and it doesn't really matter. Particularly in schools. Athletics shouldn't be a vocational activity. supported by public education funding, and win percentages aren't supposed to be the primary metric for measuring the value of school sports.

But if I'm watching a comedian, I want to laugh. Trans jokes just pull me out of the experience. Unless you're damn sure that you have something new to say, or that you can bring a valuable change to society with those jokes, just keep them in your pocket to share at the comedian social gatherings where you try to impress your peers. If you aren't actually helping, then at best, what you're saying doesn't matter.

Chappelle's latest special has material that appears to be a response to a friend who died by suicide after getting grief for their association with him. I understand that reaction. I found that instance far more interesting than anything else he or any other comedian has said about trans people.

That said, now I think I'm going to watch the Gervais special just to get context. I've liked most, though not all, of his work.

2022-05-26 9:12:22 AM
Oh good, this again.

If it makes anyone feel better, his special isn't really doing that well. It's already out of Netflix's top 10, and that's even taking into consideration they split it into TV and movies now. Chapelle's special was #1 for at least a week when both were combined. So even though he obviously isn't going to be begging for change on the street anytime soon, this kind of shows the guy has absolutely no mainstream appeal. At least in this country. His biggest hit was the American Office and he had nothing to do with it other than creating the original, less popular one

Well, for the old comedians it's less about they're angry about it than they know if they go after a group like trans people someone is going to complain online. Then when those 100-or-so people complain they can posture themselves as "free speech" advocates even though all anyone is doing is complaining online. And it's never that many people to begin with. It's whatever the version of starwmanning is when the strawmen actually do exist, but you pretend like there are waaaaay more of them than there are

Even better if their one trans friend kills herself while having a Twitter account! Then they can make her death about making people feel bad for them even though her death had nothing to do with them

I don't think Acaster's bit translates well to meme and the meme cut off part of the joke, but the point was most comedians when asked what they are challenging just respond with "I'm challenging and edgy, deal with it"
Also, if his jokes about Rape/pedophilia/etc we're about how the victims are annoying and can be bad too so they are just as bad as the rapist/pedophiles/etc I would imagine he would get push back on those too.

Judging from Netflix's own method of keeping track, no one is really watching it. Guess he'll have to try and be even edgier next time!

My point is that Gervais wasn't making trans jokes simply to be "edgy" and/or to appeal to the lowest common denominator, but was actually challenging the idea that joking about a "woman with a penis" was somehow far, far worse than jokes about the holocaust, AIDS, or pedophilia.

Because the latter no one questions as things that are inherently bad, which is where the humor comes from because they're subjects we all recognize as things that are bad. He's not challenging the audiences idea that those are bad things.

What's idea is he challenging with the trans jokes?

Gervais has been pulling the "I'm going to get cancelled" schtick for years.  It's become his working crutch, much like SNL relying on Kenan Thompson saying something loudly in his silly voice cadence to bail them out of a bad sketch.  If he didn't have his metaphorical crutch, he'd just sound like a jerk ranting to the person in the next seat as they wait for the plane to leave the gate.

And, again, he knows there will always be at least one person online who complains. So as long as that happens and he can point to that one person, that keeps the "I'm being cancelled" fuel firing forever. It's about as easy as it can be if you're a successful comedian. It's why the already successful ones are leaning into it, it's just easier than being funny

Some folks adapt with the times and other older folks get angry that things change. They're angry not everything froze in amber from the moment they scored 4 touchdowns in a high school football game. So they're angry at pretty much everything, especially at the success other people get that they felt they should've had. Which is funny because a lot of those same folks will yell about how sensitive everyone is these days after complaining about pretty much everything under the sun.

It's kinda sad but at least they can help support each other in these forums.
