So his argument is "We can't get rid of the filibuster, or we might have to discuss policy!"?

No, his argument is getting rid of it is pointless because somebody could bring it back. By extension, anything Congress does can be reversed which is why Republicans like Manchin are part of a continual effort to do absolutely nothing in Congress.*

Getting rid of the filibuster would make it easier for the GOP to just undo everything when they get back into power.  I understand the concern that wild pendulum swings like that would be chaotic.  But right now nothing is happening. The government is hopelessly broken and that brings it's own chaos. The filibuster needs to go or this whole country is going to rot away.

The filibuster...A government, each member of which makes a shiatload of money that does something like this just as a cowardly effort to run out the clock isn't farking embarrassing?

The GOP usually removes the filibuster while they have the power, then put it back in when they are losing power.

No reason we can't do the same thing. It's SOP.

2022-05-25 4:52:45 PM
Aaaaaand if you don't get rid of it NOW then you'll never get power back because the GOP will destroy voting rights.

Which means your only chance is to kill the filibuster NOW and then mobilize enough voters to destroy the GOP once and for all.

Getting a lot of mileage out of this today.

I want him to stroke out, but then we immediately lose the Senate.

I hate this f*cking timeline.

Good. Let 4 years of hellscape explain to the American people why they should never vote Conservative again. Period.

That's the dumbest f*cking most CHICKENSHIAT argument, Farkers.

If we abolished the filibuster, the Republicans would be a MINORITY in Congress.

They will absolutely do whatever they can get away with.  At the very least, it would be nice to see the Democrats doing whatever they can get away with within the rules... But they seem hell bent on additionally handcuffing themselves with 'tradition' like that will stop the GOP in future.

They're the political equivalent of penny wise, pound foolish.

Relying on the filibuster to save you from tough votes is better than voting present, but just barely.

First Prediction: If the GQP wins the Senate and House in November, the filibuster will be effectively gone shortly after they take power. Second Prediction: Manchin will vote for it.

Ok, and?

If they're really going to try and undo everything you've done (citation needed), make them farking WORK for it. As it stands they already HAVE it the way they want it, and we all know it needs to change. Whining about how we change it and chicken-littling about it changing back next time misses the fact that IT STILL NEEDS TO CHANGE, AND IT FARKING WON'T UNLESS YOU NUKE THE GODDAMN FILIBUSTER.

Worry about today's problems today, and tackle tomorrow's problems IF Republicans ever win another seat after Democrats give them what they've wanted for two farking generations.

He thinks that a 60 vote threshold in the Senate to pass bills is too small and if Democrats can't convince Republicans to vote with them then they don't deserve to be in office.

Genius politicking.

Manchin thinks giving 41 members of the minority party veto power over legislation is more democratic than giving 51 members of the majority party approval power.

He's a dirtbag puppet of a 19th-century industry whose time has long gone.

I think what he meant was that whatever is passed by simple majority will be reversed if the GOP takes the majority.

This is really the basic same argument as "Well, we can't stop 100% of shootings with legislation so we shouldn't bother with gun control."

Wasn't he also opposed to changing the filibuster to requiring people actually being on the floor if they are going to filibuster?  If eliminating the filibuster is unacceptable then modifying it to be more demanding to whoever is doing it should be an acceptable position.

... so you make sure you don't let Republicans take power again. Why is this hard for anyone to understand?

I am sick and tired of Democrats simply assuming Republicans will be in control in the near future. Republicans refuse to consider the opposite. Why do we?

Voting got Manchin in there in the first place.

Voting got TFG in there.

Voting got McConnell in there.

Voting got Biden and the Democrats in there.

Does Manchin not think THEY will be the ones getting rid of the filibuster anyway?  We are going to look very stupid when we fret about what the GQP does without a filibuster and then they just get rid of the filibuster on their own when they get a majority.

Just eliminate the non speaking filibuster.

There is literally no good reason for the non speaking filibuster to exist.

Look at it from their perspective: THEY have all sorts of protection. We saw it on Jan. 6, 2021. Sure, some of them (mostly Republicans, amusingly) nearly shiat themselves in terror when it looked like that taxpayer-funded protection might fail, but it didn't fail, thanks to that one black guy, mostly.

But now that they know nothing like that is gonna happen anytime soon, the best thing for them to do now is nothing.

And that is what they -- mostly Republicans -- intend to do here: nothing. Getting rid of an obstacle in the way of their doing nothing is the LAST thing they want to do.

You dig?

History will remember Manchin's name with the likes of James Buchanan and Neville Chamberlain.

All men who, faced a pivotal moral challenge for their age, folded up like boll weevils and rolled away to safety.
