It's always difficult for me to judge the skill level of a QB as long as they play for the Jets, but they don't seem to be any better when they leave the Jets and play for different teams either.

Do the Jets draft bad QBs or do the Jets draft QBs and ruin them?

Prediction: Something goes wrong week one and his knees blow out so hard one of them ends up on the moon.

Yet his results will still be more like Owen Wilson.

A little from column A, a little from column B.

Chad Pennington was a good quarterback, he just got hurt all the time. Couldn't exactly blame the pass protection either, that was about as good a line as I've ever seen the Jets.

I seem to recall that Kellen Clemens, who was drafted as a backup, seems to have had some decent games with the Rams. If the Jets devoted some more resources to developing him, they probably could have had a smoother transition to Mark Sanchez.

Mark Sanchez was probably overrated from the get-go, so that was probably just a bad pick. But ironically he probably has a better record than anyone else who came after because of the team around him.

Geno Smith has a good arm, but he takes too long in the pocket. He seems to have done OK in Seattle as a backup (although he's still taking too many sacks). Maybe someone could have made him a good quarterback.

Ryan Fitzpatrick obviously wasn't developed by the Jets, and had one good year with them. He then had a crappy year with them and left, but then Josh McCown took mostly the same team and had the best year of his career (which isn't saying much).

They never should have drafted Christian Hackenberg, and definitely not as high as the second round.

Sam Darnold's first two years were significantly better than his last two years, so there's a pretty good argument that Adam Gase ruined him.

Wilson... who knows. He looked OK in the pre-season, so I don't think he has fundamental problems with regards to accuracy (which we saw with guys like Sanchez or Hackenberg), so maybe being in a year and getting used to the timing, the film review, the play calls, the workouts etc, and just getting a little more mature, means that he'll improve.

The Jets also got Mike White, who wasn't drafted by them but has only seen live NFL action with them. He seems like he has potential. The other backup was James Morgan, who actually was drafted by the Jets, but couldn't even cut it in pre-season, so that's obviously a flop. Fortunately he was only a fourth-rounder so not a huge loss.

So overall, I'd say the Jets drafted three, maybe 3.5 starter-quality QBs in the last quarter century - Pennington, Darnold, and Wilson, and maybe Geno, out of 8 drafted quarterbacks. Sanchez and Hackenberg were huge misses. They probably ruined Darnold and Geno. Pennington was just unlucky, and the jury is out on Wilson. Not sure how that compares with other franchises.

That second thing, and they're probably doing it again. You watch, he'll turn out to have added the mass without learning new stretching or additional hydration or somesuch and he'll have a career-shortening injury before the season is half done.

Or Wilson became a college darling star during a season wrecked by covid and playing a rather weak schedule leading to unrealistic hopes about his potential.

Anytime an athlete says some version of "I'm in the best shape of my life", it means they don't have IT anymore.

In years past, Zach Wilson would have been a late first round to early second round selection.  This would have allowed him to spend one or two seasons on the bench where we was able to focus on absorbing an NFL playbook and adjusting to the differences in the NFL game.

Instead, he came out during a year in which several teams were desperate for a QB savior of the franchise and he was overdrafted to the number two overall selection and placed in a less than desirable situation for his long term development.
