Unfortunately....the usual result of something as horrible as the shooting in Texas is: people are going to go panic buy more guns.

Their fear of anything outside their comfort zone is so profound it overrides all rational thought, and they need the certainty and security they feel from guns.

Throwing more guns into a chaotic, hostile society already overloaded with guns and potential shooters is completely and objectively irrational, yet they constantly make tortured rationalizations arguing just that.

Those rationalizations come from their need to make an irrational escalation seem rational and necessary, which is why they always step in right after a shooting and accuse EVERYONE ELSE of being emotional and irrational.  As if mass slaughter is something we should all calmly just accept, and have never considered bad until that very moment.  All because they're afraid and don't want to be outgunned.

Or, you can just call it evil.  There's not much of a difference.

And yes, I do see the irony in that statement.

So, I'm numb to the insanity that is America in 2022, but don't I remember the NRA getting investigated for being a giant money laundering scheme or something?

Why are they still in existence?

How in the hell does this organization still exist? It's pretty much public knowledge that they're a money laundering organization for the GOP...oh wait, there it is.

In Australia we love gun control. I just never ever meet people who aren't fans. Sure some ultra-libertarian-contrarian clowns are out there, they always are, but we just had the sixth or seventh consecutive federal election campaign (going back to at least 2001, maybe I should go back to 1998, I just can't remember that long ago) when there was zero mention of guns by anyone involved in mainstream politics. That is how comfortable we are with the 1996 changes, they're nothing resembling a political issue. There has literally been more discussion about whether or not the previous Prime Minister once shiat his pants while drunk in a McDonalds before his political career (he denies it) than there has been about allowing currently illegal guns (like the AR15, for example) to be legalised.

Gun licencing is a no-brainer. The NRA insists it only represents law-abiding gun owners, what the fark has it got to fear from licencing gun owners and registering firearms? Plenty of law-abiding Australians own guns because they're farmers, hunters or recreational shooters, and every one of them is licenced to own and use their guns, which are all registered. If vehicle drivers need to pass tests to obtain licences before they are allowed on the road by themselves, it's even more logical to apply this thinking to guns. And so most of the developed world does exactly that.

Restricting guns which can be mis-used with the most deadly effect is also a no-brainer. If Australians can hunt large feral animals (wild pigs can get pretty big, I presume our deer are the same size as American deer, roos can be pretty decent size too) with the limited range of guns allowed here, why the fark can't Americans manage it? Restricting handguns is also a no-brainer. They are, after all, responsible for the majority of gun deaths in America. We don't have concealed-carry here and there's literally no call to have it, nobody feels the need. Some security guards are allowed holstered weapons if they're transporting particularly valuable/important stuff, but it's a tiny number relative to the population.

The NRA used to be about sensible gun ownership. Now it's insane. And people are dying every day as a result of their opposition to better options.

Gun nuts:  DON'T BLAME THE GUNS! LET'S DEAL WITH MENTAL HEALTH!

Sane people: Ok, then we'll need a full government agency devoted to assessing the mental health of gun owners and disarming them if they're not mentally fit.  That's going to require regular mental health checks and registration of all guns, as well as a tax increase that should probably be tacked on to gun sales

Uh.  There is no war against alcohol.  The ATF's job is to regulate and tax alcohol sales.

How about we have a law that all guns have to have gun locks that are wifi-enabled, so that the law knows where you are when your gun is unlocked, and if it's not near a gun club or a hunting area you get a call that if you don't answer you get a visit?

\maybe a cleaning beacon too for when it's being cleaned

Thank the takeover of the group by the gun nuts in the 1970's.  That's when everything changed and they went from a gun advocacy and training group to a face for the gun manufacturers (and their demands to have ever more guns in the hands of the public, of every type).

The NRA got addicted to the money from the nuts.  Then they got alot of foreign money because of the nuts being useful idiots.

There is literally a lawsuit regarding the embezzling that senior members of the NRA systemically engaged in to pad their lifestyle tax free.

Don't take away a right to buy guns, but make the gun owners carry insurance. Make premiums lower for responsible owners, those that had safety training, have a method to secure the guns, a clean background. Those that don't, we'll you pay more. It's not like there is a model for that. All of the sudden the gun owners will want only responsible people carrying guns instead of every person possible having one.

No insurance? Any violent offenses or negligence forfeit your right to own a gun and you are responsible for damages to the penny until paid in full. It's ridiculous that vehicle operation and ownership is regulated but gun ownership isn't. Guns have a much more limited purpose, but are commonly used by people who should not have them. And yes-it's constitutionally protected, but you still have laws that can cause you to lose that right. It wouldn't be perfect but it would damn well be a start to make people responsible.

Glad to see your strawman factory is doing well. I don't actually have a problem with registration or mental health checks. Most gun owners are more than okay with gun control of one kind or another they are just drowned out in the debate by the loudest and craziest.

Americans are ammo-sexuals and NEED their safety blankets.

You can't take away their toys without them throwing a goddamn hissy fit because they're ENTITLED to them!

It's on some old document somewhere, and of course since it was written down ONCE it CANNOT be changed or updated because our founding daddies knew best!

Nevermind the rest of the world looks at 'em like "what's the obsession with the pew pew noisemakers? You, like take 'em to bed with you?"

The answer is probably yes.

If someone could legally marry their gun it'd probably happen in America.
