I dunno.  I suspect I could roar "I LOVE YOU, YOU CUTE FUZZY SWEETHEART" at an animal and get a negative response while lilting "I'm going to cook you and eat you" might get a positive one.

It's not 'emotion', it's tone.  Don't be sharp, loud, or utter anything that might sound like a hiss or growl.
