I don't understand how the sentence for this is only 10 years. He stole three quarters of a million dollars by lying, and in the process furthered the stupid and very often racist idea that programs like federal disability payments are scam-riddled clusterfarks designed for freeloaders and the taker class.

Everything he owns should be forfeit. He should have absolutely nothing to return to when he gets out of prison.

That's horrible Pocket Ninja - that's unacceptable punishment.

/it should be much worse
//speaking as a disabled person that's barely surviving on disability
///abusers of the program should be disabled in order to legitimize further benefits - preferably with a tire iron

He's only getting 10 years because it's a victimless crime to rip off the taxpayers. If he had stolen from a bunch of rich arseholes like Bernie Madoff, that would be a different story.

Everything he owns probably IS forfeit. It's unlikely that the guy actually has the money to pay back.

This is pretty common actually. People get better but don't want the checks to stop, so they just don't tell the government. The government does a shiat job of following up with these people or even reviewing the medicals along with their disability claims. The fact that he got away with this for ten years says more about government malfeasance than fraud.

Or...
Just maybe, WE ARE SILLY TO EXPECT people to be sitting in poop 24/7.

My mom is disabled.  But, she can take a fistful of vicadin and get shiat done. Like go have fun with the grandchildren.  Or work her part time job.
But. She is farked.  She spends days in bed in pain. I've seen it my whole life. When I was a kid the pain presented as constant anger.
Only 20 years later did the pain display as a woman who can't even get out of bed to eat.

Our way of thinking is silly.  Disabled people have good days. Good days should not be proof of zero. Period.  Fight me ladies and gentlemen.

I skimmed the OP. This dude sounds like he could be one of those people who had long runs of being able. That isn't proof that he isn't suffering.
Saw off people.  You don't know how some people will force themselves to get er' done. And then suffer for days.
And the thing is you can get fired during pain days.
Hence the self employment.
Jfc.  Think critically people.
Also they check you case every 4 to 7 years.

From another link :

Man caught lifting weights after $730K disability payout now going to prison, feds say

As part of his testimony, Utley told authorities that he had no prior back injuries before the 2009 incident, prosecutors said. But court documents show that Utley failed to report he was in at least nine car accidents before 2009 in which he filed several lawsuits for neck and back injuries.

Nine car accidents. Demolition derby served him well, for a while, then he had to mess with the feds.

There's plenty of workers comp fraud.  It sounds like this guy's primarily responsible, but it also sounds like the doctor, the claims person/department and the USPS all helped the situation along.  I'm guessing, that along with that, communication among all the parties is a genuine clusterf*ck and once the thing got rolling, nobody thought they should be the one to put on the brakes.

Actually, what jumped out at me was that in all that time, there was nobody to rat him out.  Ex-spouses, drinking "buddies", ex-co-workers are generally a decent source of info.  Then again, they may have, but it seems like a system that ignores that kind of thing, like it was their only source, forgetting that they could do their own on top of that.  That, and the don't-make-waves spirit of bureaucracy.

I'd say, force people to hire the disabled and require a 3rd party to fire them. And then get back to me.

Judges of disability are odd people.  Some  Magistrates would consider Hawkins not disabled because he published a book and has deep  Insightful ideas.
Some magistrates think if you can find job with the right conditions that will work around you and with you, you must not be disabled.

But.  It's disingenuous.

Fact is employers are fark heads. And don't care about workers have a bad day and will fire you.
And this is why the law says:
Get and maintain gainful employment.

Please focus on the maintain part.
Anyone can get a job.
The issue is the maintain part.
Should people be stuck getting constantly fired? And who's going to hire people fired 20 times?
We let people doing the hiring and firing  cause an issue.  ANDthen disingenuously say people a trying to scam..
The working man has no one on his side.
Working person.

I'm not necessarily defending this person specifically.  But. Much of what has been said isn't proof.  I understand many think it is.
But, narcotics like hydrocodone are amazing.  And can help determined people do stuff they can't.
And, no, accounting errors aren't proof of a wider "scam".

I still insist I didn't get Pandemic Funds. The bank insist I was overdrawn.  Who's "lying "
I have no reason to try to steal from my own bank and some would say the bank has no reason to "steal" 300 bucks. Meh. I'm not fighting it because magically nothing else  Bounced especially the rent check.  Odd. But okay?  I managed to not have money and yet also didn't mess anything up. I'm not that good at math. See his allocution statement here https://www.justice.gov/usao-mdfl/press-release/file/1473091/download and see if you still come to the same conclusion (and by the way this was not an Alford plea it was a straight up "I did it, I am guilty plea") . Early in my career I worked for a workers comp bureau as a staff attorney, and this chucklehead looks like a poster child for workers comp/disability fraud.

Wait. The states/governments own doctor say he'll need restrictions to go back to work.

^that's all I'm saying.
There are degrees.  And, not being in bed 24/7 isn't the proof of crap.

Also, the changes against him are financial charges.   Taking more and not being disabled aren't the same. 🍎 & 🍊.

I'm sorry but, I personally, won't Begrudge  a other human for not sending back a direct deposit.  Especially while in the middle of a dispute.  🤷‍♂

And again, the gym and trips don't prove anything.
My mom worked in pain for 25+ years.
Only after it was too much. Did she get fired.
And that behavior of just working in pain is what half of you, in the comments, are unknowingly demanding.
🤷‍♂

You probably don't want to know how much of this is happening at the VA either.  I know only so many military retireeeeees, and almost all of them are at 100% disability somehow (one lifts heavy things and welds, the other works on his house all day, climbing ladders, going on the roof, etc.  They're taught how to gain the system when retiring.

It may not be the 8000$ a month that some police departments get, but being 100% disabled  in Virginia gets you:

Zero property tax on your house
Zero property tax on your car
NO income tax on your military pension

It's way too easy to game the system.

No. I don't think only the bed ridden should get disability.  And the law doesn't  Either.
Their allowed to earn up $900 a month and not have their amount changed.

The law literally says:
Get and maintain gainful employment.
Can any of the people you mentioned legitimately GET and MAINTAIN GAINFUL employment???????
Doing what? And, can they survive the difficult part of first starting out that is longer than usual days? And can they avoid being fired for being late. Leaving early.  And can that job be done safely while on drugs?
