Finally watched Candyman 2021. And, wow...it really hit different. In a good way.

Candyman is one of my favorite horror films, and I re-watch it at least once a year for Halloween. But what Jordan Peele and Nia DeCosta did with the reboot was phenomenal. I did miss Tony Todd, but Yahya Abdul-Mateen II was excellent.

Between this and Get Out, Peele has a 'take my money' pass from me. Can't wait for Nope.

Did they drop the whole "slave killed by bees getting revenge" aspect of Candyman? I read awhile back that that was never the intent of the character in the original film and the sequels were largely responsible for it.

It was in the original film, but I don't recall that it was mentioned in the original short story by Clive Barker.

Nope. Daniel Robitaille is still very much a part of the story. But it adds in others in the community who have suffered injustices and taken on the mantle of Candyman. It expands the urban legend aspect to include issues like gentrification, generational trauma of a community, and the descent/devolution of obsession into horror and madness.

I highly recommend it.

Really? Caught it at the theater cause I loved the originals growing up and this one just kind of ok, I guess. Felt like they chopped a whole chunk of storyline involving his transformation and the cult, since it just suddenly kind of happens. Some good scenes, but haven't felt the need to rewatch it and I went in fully expecting that I would be buying this on blu-ray once it came out.

/I think Peele was just Exec Prod on Candyman
//Will be seeing Nope opening week
///Us was a little bit of a let down but still solid

The bees were part of Daniel/Candyman's torture. The lynch mob took a honeycomb from a nearby hive and smeared it on him, causing the bees to sting him to death.

If it came out in August of 2021, how are rewatching it at least once a year? The year isn't over. Anytime you watch it, your "at least" grows bigger. You watch it at least 3 times?

You do know that there was a first film released in 1992, right?

I mean I suppose it's my fault for not specifying the original film and painting a target on myself for pedants...

No, i was actually confused. As you mentioned 2021. I suppose I could have done some extrapolation on my part.

Yeah, the bees thing was added for the movie. The original story was just about the power of myths, and that they still happen even with "urban myths".

I'm just going to assume spiders are in those clouds.  That's the only acceptable answer.
