Sounds like my employer. They have:

'Not diverse' - White / Asian
'Diverse' - Everyone else

Just substitute "Over-represented" for "not diverse" and "under-represented" for "diverse" and you realize your employer is trying to fix the fact that they are profoundly racist without admitting that they are racist.

White is the default sounds like it's in the base code. Poor AI never had a chance...

I believe in Canada the cops still have only two categories - white and non-white.  You'd think that'd have evolved with the demographics over the last few decades.

Could be worse. In Canada they might be able to justify white and VERY white

This. Without human interference, machines do facial recognition and identification of people with no need for "race". The hex colours in skin are just another hundred data points when figuring out whether something is a person and which person it is.

May not be intentional, though: "white" skin has the highest contrast ratio between skin and facial features, making it easier for an AI to apply 'proper' edge detections, recognize it as a face and process the results -- especially under subpar lighting conditions.

Like food, really.  There's hot dog, and not hot dog!

AI is not synthetically conscious, it is not magic. AI does what it was programmed to do, by humans. AI might eventually be, on the surface, indistinguishable from a human, but Boolean algebra operating on binary bits does not occur anywhere in nature and will always be a machine.

My brain is already a little bit mashed potatoes from the ADHD and I haven't had my coffee.

Can anyone explain the mechanism in article to me like I'm 5?

A long time ago, I realized that even if your consciousness *could* be uploaded into a machine, your "thoughts" would still be conditioned by the people who wrote the code, and they could literally script that to keep you from thinking what they didn't want you to.

If you uploaded your brain into a computer it would just be a copy of you, not you.

Oh, and also, I get the feeling if you were copied atom for atom the copy would not work.

I remember my first real "class" in computers, it was computer camp at Springfield College in 1981. The first thing they handed us was a mimeographed page that at the bottom had GIGO and the explanation for the acronym.

Human beings insist on classifying each other based on self-selected categories.
Categories in, categories out.

People are racist, so the AI we design is racist.

That's really all there is to it. If you train a neutral network to ID people, but most of the people in the data are white, it will classify people into white/not white.

It's something to be aware of when using oR training AI.
