The authors - some of whom had access to Canada's most prized secrets

Prized secrets such as:

* what the hell do they put in that St-Huberts gravy, anyway?
* why do the Leafs suck so bad
* where their strategic maple syrup reserve is held

We've been dealing with this since 2016, FFS.  The moment Trump started it on his racist, xenophobic rhetoric after he descended that escalator, the reverberations were felt here in Canada.  Over time, racist attacks have skyrocketed, xenophobia has increased, right-wing extremism has become a thing in broad daylight when it barely existed before (or at least, had the good sense to hide itself under the rocks where it belongs).  The trucker convoys and blockades were just the inevitable outcomes of several years of this shiat spilling over from TFG's bullshiat politics, and given the spurs by the events of 1/6.

The time to have started thinking about bolstering our national security was five years ago.  The barn doors are still open and the horses are still galloping out of it.  Granted, we still don't have things as bad as they are in the US, but already our right-wing politics are having an outsized influence thanks to the emboldened far-right loonies.  Ford is still the favourite to win a second term in Ontario by a double-digit margin when he should be kicked out on his ass as soundly as Harper was in 2015 in a little over a week.  But here we are.

The US is no longer a democracy, the theocrats are in charge. Abortion, gay marriage, hell, even interracial marriage are on the chopping block. The crazies have taken over enough that the rest of the world has to take a long hard look at what our future relationship will be with the failed states of 'murica.

I mean, I get it, Canada. Sometimes when you have that friend that you love dearly, but they keep doing self-destructive things, you gotta just let them go. Otherwise, you'll just get dragged under with them. I can't say it's unjustified.

Epic Fap Session: I didn't think that was something that vassal states got to do.

Then flip it around and think of it this way - the US can no longer keep Canada as a vassal state, and they're stepping out on their own, without any input from the USA.
Yet another example of how weak our country has become.

We elected Donald motherf*cking Trump President. We gave the highest elected office in the nation to a venial narcissist with delusions of competence, a corrupt bastard who sold out allies at every turn.

If it can happen once, it can happen again, and the Canucks can readily see that these asshats are still hopeful and gearing up for another run.

They're f*cking right.

The GOP is not to be trusted. As long as there is a possibility they become the ruling party again, Canada is correct in eyeing the US as a security threat.

They need the US much more than the US needs them.  Although, I hear there may be some opportunities in Europe for a frozen country that has vast natural resources for sale.  How hard could it be to transport tar sands across the Atlantic?  Or maybe Canada could refine their own sludge and become the next Saudi Arabia.

But yeah, the US is screwed.  Democracy doesn't yield good results when half the 'demo' are hate-filled, racist, sexist, magical thinking, authoritarians.

Haha remember when people used to criticize Trump for saying fake news.

Now people openly calling press sources they don't like or disagree with a "threat to democracy."

Which is strange and ironic considering the people who wrote our constitution considered a free press to be vital to democracy

I said similar years ago, when Trump cited the war of 1812 as a security concern, in regards to trade.

And when long standing deals and arrangements were being broken and ignored, for years.

At present, no agreement with the states should be considered to last longer than the next president. The states forgot that when they break a deal on a whim then anyone else should bear in mind that they will do so again.

What Hubie said above. They absolutely should have plans in case the US goes completely off the rails. It's teetering and quite possibly will fall to fascism. After fascism removes all the interior scapegoats and the problems didn't go away they always start looking outward.

I think their biggest concern about the US is Trumpist infection.  Or perhaps I'm just hearing from a guy in BC who is an Albertan at heart, and thinks they are completely losing it to Trumpism.

I'm fairly confident that Canada can stay sane, but am hardly an expert.

Weaver95: Canada is absolutely justified in being worried about the stability of the US government. We are showing multiple signs of instability and possible collapse.

The saying about "US sneezes, Canada catches a cold" must be worrying as they look at our scary country.  Not sure what options they have next to an insane giant.

At this point, with the rise of conservatives and re-publicans, they would be entirely justified in that move.

Is there where someone should point out that last time the US picked a fight with Canada, the US did not win and, in fact, got its capitol sacked?

Then, some helpful American will claim, "it wasn't Canada then," to which many Canadians will point out that it had a well-formed Canadian identity at that point.

Or should we wait?

Blue states should secede from the pending clusterf$ck and join Canada (and maybe Mexico) in some type of American Union.  Democratic Nations of the Americas.  DNA.

That would pretty much make Canada the richest country overnight if all blue states went.  The whole west coast, northeast, and at least some of the Great Lakes states*.  A whole bunch of finance, agriculture, and industry in those three areas.

* Even if all the Great Lakes states didn't join voluntarily (Ohio, Indiana), Canada could easily acquire the coasts of all the great lakes in the confusion and turmoil.  They'd have MN and IL for sure, possibly WI and MI.  All you'd need to do is secure northern OH and IN, which shouldn't be too hard given the more liberal nature of northern OH, and the tiny amount of IN that touches Lake Michigan.
