I have Games with Gold and I don't know how to complain about getting something for free without sounding like an ass?

But they give you old XBox arcade games (equivalent to iPhone apps basically) where places like Epic and even PlayStation give away actual big name games.

In the (distant) past GwG gave names like Assassins Creed and Tomb Raider games.
Anymore it's tower defense or another boat/dirt bike/atv racer

Again, it's free so I really shouldn't complain, but it's clear they want you pay for GamePass instead

I'm there with you. I don't want game pass because I prefer to pay for games and own them rather than pay for a subscription to access the games as long as I pay the ever growing monthly fee. I'll take the free games, but it'd be nice if they'd put more than one game a year on there that I'd like to play or isn't some cheap garbage arcade game.

As someone who very seldom finishes a game, game pass is perfect for me.

I can try out lots of different games, lots of different types of games, and if I like it then great. If not, it didn't cost me anything extra.

I value it more for those $15-$20 games that I'd never buy but now get to play

I liked it better when you can go to a store and buy games like back in the day. Got something physical to take home and use on the computer for the rest of whatever. All my old Windows 98 games still work today on my retro Windows 98 box I put together from eBay.. Won't see that happen with an X-box game pass years down the road.

PS+ makes me feel like a thief sometimes.  In one 12 month span I got the Bioshock and Uncharted collections for the PS4 AND Uncharted 4 and MGS5.  There are dry spells, mind you, but it's always worth the price.

That hack was almost a blessing in disguise.

All this.

Also I tend to finish games more on GamePass because if I'm enjoying it I know it'll leave the service eventually. So I tend to try out games I never might've otherwise, and play through them. I'm not sure how anyone runs out of things to play on the service but if they're not getting anything out of it, no need to give Microsoft their money I guess. I'm more surprised that there would be many people paying month to month.

Feels like a weird viral ad for Sony's upcoming service though. Which looks good too, if not a little weird with the all the tiers. Waiting for the full game list to come out to see if it's worth converting Plus Essential to Extra.

I'm not 100% sure it's still a thing, but you could convert your Gold sub to Game Pass sub for like $1.

There was a time when you could pre load your Xbox gold with 18 months.

Do the upgrade for $1 and it converted all 18 months.

Plus there's often sales on the vouchers

Nope, it's just $1 to covert all your remaining time. I did it for a couple years worth right away and per other forums it's still active to do for up to 36 months. So if you've got a dollar, you can make that gold sub a bit more worth your money.

It's 100% still a thing. You stack up 3 years (the max) of Gold and then convert the whole thing to Ultimate for $1. You can't be a current Ultimate sub when you do it though.

FWIW I agree with the sentiment that was tangentially expressed in the article that this is just clout wars or a bunch of dudes trying to raise their own profile with a hot take. Some of us can't play so much that we've cleared our backlogs and gone through all of the Gamepass stuff. There's good shiat there still and some of it is even AAA as if that means anything anymore. I got a couple I'm playing, and several more I'll play after that.

Gamepass pro tip - you can get this free by doing daily tasks on Microsoft Rewards.

Just go to https://rewards.microsoft.com/ and do their random daily BS tasks while drinking your morning coffee.  Only takes a minute or so.  Also set up Edge with 30 or so Bing searches as your homepage and you can one-click over 100 points a day.  No one uses edge anyways.

Sure there's a lot on offer, but a lot of it is little better than freeware and at the end of the day you're paying them a fee to put billboards on your dash.  They've got like $70 billion for Bethesda but couldn't even design a new interface for their "next gen" system?(which I didn't want but also now can't find lol)

I meant what kind of ridiculous hyperbolic nonsense is calling most of it little better than freeware?

Then again free to play games have been getting better even if they're bloated with microtransactions.

2022-05-24 1:00:21 PM
yeah i do find the game folks out to know this.

a big new long play hot title is quite likely to become a "mains" play time for a gamer filling up their primary free time to play games with just the one game.
And only when we don't have a long play hot title to be sunk into do we tend to flit around a bit between various games in our free time.

So yeah a sub service to access games need to know that if they do not include the new hot titles then they are not good to pay for when yo do have a new hot title that will fill 40-100+ hours of play time in a month or more.

maybe if the sub service included more ongoing value that could be tapped when a mains game is filling up the time. but if the main value is just aces to older games, then that's not a good value to pay for when i got a mainstay  game play to be dumping time into.

Why would the Series S and X need a radically new dashboard? Aside from having a section for Quick Resume pinned games, the new consoles are just faster Xbox Ones.

I don't see a need for change for the sake of change. That's how you get Windows 11.

Not to mention every Xbox dashboard has possibly been worse than the one that came before it. It might not be good, but I can (mostly) find where my games are these days and with only a little bit of effort, invite my friends into a party.

Yup. But sometimes in the past that used to get buried in other tabs or could be replaced by individual apps/games or you'd have to press the start button to get to it or sometimes not the start button but the shoulder buttons.

And if you know a gamertag, finding that person to send them an invite is still a nightmare.

Anyway, it could be better, but it has been a whole lot worse in the past.

Oh, even better - not only will it convert that time but if you got two weeks of ultimate from a promotion (e.g. Kellogg's) then you convert the whole deal plus those whole two weeks.

The other direction sucks, because if you try to add a year of gold to your ultimate it gets turned into six months, but letting Game Pass lapse and then begining again is worth it in the dry summer months before the huge release in Fall.

I'm almost finished with Yakuza: Like A Dragon, and I'll probably buy it like I did Control. Huge recommend. Total fun. I can call a crayfish and her army on my phone to attack a guy after I saved her from being eaten in a sidequest.
That's Yakuza not Control, to be clear. I know it sounds like an SCP.

How many games are people playing at the same time?

I play one at a time and I forget the control schemes after being busy with something else for a week.

Instead of game pass, I think I would be better off owning 3-4 games every year - 1 at full price and 2-3 at sales and bundles. I wanted to play Elden Ring but I'm still finishing up some game pass stuff that I'm not even enjoying.

I agree. I also do the games with gold for the freebies. (Though, not ALL are really free. The old 360 games are, but you gain game pass like access to the xbox one games. As long as you're subscribed you can play those so called "free" games.

One of my issues is there are a number of 360 games I want to buy, but since they're cheap - $9.99 to $14.99, I fully expect them to be put up for free the month after I pay for them.

Do people complain about not getting to own the movies they watch on streaming services? Do they think, well if I just don't subscribe to Netflix for three months with all its lame indie jazz, I can afford to buy a big--budget AAA movie of my own?

I mean I'm guessing some people think like that. Just not very many smart ones.

Because of gamepads I own the dlc for a few games, without owning the actual game.

No real complaints, I got my money out of them, and if I ever want to play after it leaves gsmepass I'll probably be able to pick it up cheap.

Yeah, gamepass has Spiritfarer, an incredible indy game that I have heard nothing but glowing things about and that I probably cannot play because it will emotionally destroy me. because the entire premise is you are taking the place of charon helping (animal representations of) people after their death work through their remaning regrets/issues, then helping them pass on to...

whatever

is next.

And they do a very good job of this, from everything I hear.

Spiritfarer is excellent, and very emotional towards the end.

There is also What Remains of Edith Finch, another emotional game.  Both of these games I probably would never have even heard of or tried without Game Pass.  In fact I'm loving a lot of the Annapurna games and seems they have a good deal with GP.

All I can say is that I have had at least one game from Game Pass installed and at least occasionally played since its inception.

Currently have "Tunic" and "Turnip Boy commits tax evasion" up and running. This was after just playing "Eiyuden Chronicle: Rising".

Will get that tennis game in July.

The only knock on the entire experience is that Destiny 2 as part of Game pass was clunky at best. I blame Bungie for that really.
